Graeme Guthrie is a professor in the School of Economics and Finance at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. His research has appeared in the top journals on finance and economics, and as a consultant he has provided advice on a wide variety of issues in relation to agriculture, electricity, gas, real estate, and telecommunications, much of it using real options analysis.

Excellent

This is an excellent book on real option analysis. My major frustration with most real options books is that they read like infomercials, successfully selling the idea that ROA is superior to NPV analysis but then they either never actually get around to telling you how to implement it, or if they do, provide 'cookie cutter' tools that are too inflexible to be useful in analyzing real world projects. What makes this book so good is that it not only covers the theory behind ROA in detail, but it actually shows you how to apply the theory to a wide variety of projects. After reading it I find myself in the pleasant situation of being more than happy to open up my spreadsheet and start modeling real world projects.

All the math in the book is done in discrete time making it a lot more accessible than continuous time books, like the interesting but academic Dixit and Pindyck. Now don't get me wrong, this book is definitely not a read in one sitting airport bookshop finance book. It is quite challenging in parts. But your efforts will be rewarded with an excellent understanding of ROA.

Kathy Norris is one of the most innovative loom knitters around and her current book is a testament to this talented designer. Written for use with the plastic round and long looms, this is one of the best and most well organized loom knitting books for both the beginner and for those of us who want to learn new techniques and stitch patterns.

The first part of the book lays the ground work needed by offering several versions of basic hat designs. Next is an overview of general stitches and techniques required to make more advanced projects featured in the remainder of the book. The basic hat designs are the only easy skill level projects in the book and are included mainly as an instructional module for beginners. The other projects are high quality intermediate skill level designs that anyone would be proud to create or give as gifts.

The projects in this book include:
* Three hat patterns that focus on teaching the basics for beginners. These are the only easy skill level projects.
* A stunning sampler afghan that utilizes twelve different stitch pattern blocks with an attached I-cord edging that is loom knitted directly onto the afghan.
* Two hat and scarf sets; one in a corn-on-the-cob stitch pattern and another in a honeycomb stitch.
* A felted basket weave pattern tote.
* A versatile hooded sweater vest.
* A lovely lattice patterned throw pillow.

i can't believe i'm loom knitting

i love this book, easy to understand, well written, detailed instuctions and pictures makes it easy to follow and learn the stitches. i am working on the 12 stitch afgahan now and pleased with each block. i would recommend this book for the everyone.

Good starter, but needs some tweaks

I never could get the hang of needle knitting, so I was really happy to hear about loom knitting and find out how simple the process is. I ordered this book as a kind of Loom Knitting 101 course and have been pretty pleased so far.

Since I'm a beginner, I can't really say how innovative the designs are or anything like that. I can say that I was able to get started right away and produce hats and scarves that were of professional-looking quality. I made a striped hat for my little boy and had friends ask where I bought it, so that was pretty good!

The problem I have with the book is mainly with the instructions for cables and the pattern given for the basketweave section of the 12-square afghan. While the cable instructions say you must "loosely" knit, they don't really emphasize just how loose they should be and the best way to go about ensuring this. I wound up searching on YouTube until I found a video of someone knitting cables. Once I saw that you should use markers on your cable section and double-wrap those pegs on the row prior to the cable, I was able to produce beautiful stitches.

The other thing is that the pattern listed for basketweave seems incorrect. Again, I'm a beginner and it's possible that I just screwed up. However, when I finished the square and bound it off and pulled it to examine the swatch, there were no horizontal lines. It was only vertical squares. In my thinking, if it was an error on my end where I missed a line of instructions, only a portion of the swatch would have been messed up. The swatch was consistent, though. Now, it's still a cute pattern. I kind of like it more than the basketweave. It's like a funky, retro look that brings to mind Flint Lockwood's "coolness enhancement" paint job from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. But, if someone is really wanting the basketweave, she would be understandably upset with the results.

In this long-awaited book—the first in a three-volume work—David M. Perlmutter has co-authored and edited ten essays that introduce relational grammar, a novel conception of sentence structure that offers far-reaching conclusions for universal grammar.

The basic ideas of relational grammar can be simply stated. First, grammatical relations such as 'subject of,' 'direct object of,' and 'indirect object of,' are needed to characterize the class of grammatical constructions in the clausal syntax of natural languages, to formulate universals of grammar, and to construct adequate and insightful grammars of individual languages. Second, the range of linguistic variation in word order and case patterns makes it impossible to define grammatical relations in terms of phrase structure configurations or case. Rather, grammatical relations must be taken as primitive notions of linguistic theory.

The papers collected here take up the first of these ideas. They lay out the basic theoretical constructs of relational grammar and discuss three areas of grammar—advancement construction, raising, and clause union. In his introduction, Perlmutter discusses each of the papers—most of which are published here for the first time—and places them in the�context of the whole of linguistic study.

I enjoyed this book as I have enjoyed others by this author. It is probably a little advanced for my skill level. I wish that it was as easy as implied to see squeeze situations and plan out the preparations.

Wilford Welch's career has been devoted to understanding and taking action to address global challenges - as a U.S. diplomat in Asia, a professor of international business, the publisher of a world affairs publication and as an international business consultant. In 2004 he co-founded the Quest for Global healing initiative which brings thousands of people together from around the world every other year to help transform their concerns over environmental and social challenges into concrete initiatives. Being part of the solution

I was raised in a family that believed that if we are not part of the solution then we are part of the problem. Yet figuring out how to participate in that solution can sometimes be challenging. Tactics of Hope provides us with these needed suggestions and guideposts as well as support in understanding our gift and then where and how we can bring that gift forward into the world, becoming part of the solution. Wilford Welch reassures us that we really do matter. That as we find our passion and bring it forward, we are in very good company. It is in this context that Welch speaks to the heart of evolving communities around the world. He features stories about others who brought their unique gifts forward in support of that evolution, on a local or global level. Welch's stories of individuals making a difference are uplifting and inspiring. Each story uniquely exemplifies a potential model for governments, corporations, non-profits or individuals in how to move into a dynamically changing world, all becoming parts of the solution. Highest recommendation for all generations as it brings forward the hope so beautifully captured in it's title.

Awesome book on social entrepreneurship with inspiring case studies and excellent perspectives for seasoned practitioners in the field of nonprofits/social change as well as those less experienced who are interested in making a difference in the world and looking for some guidance/advice/opportunities. I used selected parts of the book for a workshop I taught at Stanford University and highly recommend "Tactics of Hope".

Sharon A. Hansen, MSE, NBCT, is a professionally licensed school counselor in Berlin, WI. Not For High-School Students

I can't fathom why this book is specifically labeled for use by teens; it isn't appropriate for that age range. Rather than practical interventions, most of the exercises are self-help activities (like imagining your inner fears as a beast and then drawing a picture of that beast) that would only be welcome and useful for younger children and maybe adults. Most teens with executive dysfunction or other LDs are already sensitive to being infantilized, and a lot of Hansen's exercises assume a level of self-reflectiveness that most teens-- especially teens with EF issues-- simply developmentally don't yet have. For useful, teen-appropriate exercises, I recommend Peg Dawson's book "Coaching Students with Executive Skills Deficits."

Helpful Resource for Struggling Students

I am a counselor who works with students in areas of organization, planning, goal setting and more, and found this book offered some very useful insights and exercises for working with teenage students. The initial self-assessment that targets and labels specific deficiencies in executive functioning seems particularly helpful. Sometimes it's difficult to put a name on where the weakness lies, and this assessment helps to break up student challenges into various areas, with coinciding activities and further insights to focus on later in the book. I do think this book would be most effective as a joint effort between counselor or caring adult and students, as difficulty with individual homework completion is often a reality for these students, and more such exercises that the book offers to do on their own might prove daunting or unattainable. All in all, I think this book could serve as a valuable resource for providing insight, encouraging reflection, and practicing, developing and honing skills for better school and life success.

About the Author

Beau Williamson, CCIE(r) No. 1346, is a consulting engineer in the Office of the CTO at Cisco Systems. His area of expertise is general IP networking, with a special focus on IP multicast. He is frequently called upon by Cisco customers and internal Cisco engineers around the world to consult on the design, implementation, and debugging of IP multicast networks. Beau is also the author and developer of Cisco's internal IP multicast training class, as well as a frequent presenter of IP-related topics at Cisco Networkers and CCIE conferences domestically and abroad.

Good foundational book, even in 2008

I was skeptical about buying a book this old, but I just finished it and am still slightly amazed at how little has changed in multicast technology in ~8 years. I have read Doyle's multicast coverage, listened to InternetworkExpert's excellent "class on demand" (CoD) on the topic many times, and worked through over half of their 20 CCIE lab scenarios, all of which have multicast sections. This doesn't make me an expert by any means, but I know enough now to recognize that the material in this book is still worth reading.

The differences between this book and Doyle's (2004) are:
- Williamson dedicates a lot more effort to explaining the mroute table. This was my single biggest stumbling block in multicast routing
- Doyle, IMO, gives IGMP a better treatment
- Doyle goes over mtrace and mstat
- Williamson spreads the information out over more pages via liberal usage of config snips and diagrams, often one per page. This allows him to go into *brutal, painful and excruciating* detail about every line in the mroute table, every flag, every state transition, etc.
- Williamson does a more thorough job of explaining exactly what happens in PIM-SM networks (100+ pages to Doyle's ~25)
- Doyle goes over Anycast RP and gives a better explanation of MSDN, which appears to have been rather cutting edge when Williamson put finger to keyboard

I finished the book in about a week of serious effort, but I skipped the following chapters (Cisco has not put much effort into the technologies described), leaving me with about 400 pages of groovyness:
DVMRP
CBT
MOSPF
Connecting to DVMRP Networks
and several sections of other chapters

To be sure, some things have changed. I didn't see any mention of the "ip pim autorp listener" command, which negates the need for sparse-dense mode when configuring Auto-RP (can't recall if Doyle mentioned that either). Also, in current versions of IOS one *does* need to specify the RP on the RP itself, whereas Williamson (and Doyle) explicitly say this is not the case (they were both right at the time of print, Cisco has changed this). Overall however, I would say that easily >95% of the material is solid here.

So which book to buy? Well if you're serious about the CCIE and/or running a multicast network you'll get both, and read them both several times. I do hope Williamson updates the book though, as he alludes to several draft proposals, and gives a "state of the multicast internet" address that I would like to know more about without digging through two dozen RFCs. Also, the few things that have changed would be a boon to the book.

Best Book on Multicast

I have been struggling to get through multicast for a long time now. The multicast being run on our production environment did not help me either. After reading alot of stuff on on internet i came across this book. This is one stop shop for all the multicast questions and concepts. After spending 2 long weeks on this book I am now teaching my colleagues how the multicast cookie crumbles.

The initial chapters take you from the origins of the multicast to what it is today. The book is pretty old but is still very well written. One of the books from Cisco Press which when was written, earth shook. :)

IP multicasting

The book is very in depth with good focus and examples of programming needs and scenarios that back up the reading material. I especially like the fact that they cover the history of multicast and why and where the needs arrived for it. I am hoping for some supplemental information as things change in the IT world, and the original design evolves more with the increased data stream needs. Well worth the money, and worth the time to use and read for learning. I also like how the book does not focus on teaching a exam, but shows examples to strengthen the engineering design and true applications for world operations.
