Shipped Quickly
By Izzy
It was a rather large book, but at least it was paper back and not too heavy. It's not the product's fault, but I do hate that I bought this book and we hardly even used it for reference in my Public Speaking class. It shipped rather quickly and appeared at my doorstep within a few short days, and I can't get mad at that!

It's fine.
By Donald Chappell
It was the book it was advertised. It wasn't the book I thought I had ordered, be careful to make sure it's not another book with the same title, publisher, author, and almost the same name, but it was reasonable quality.

Excellent FM handbook for 2001 and beyond
By A Customer
A very comprehensive manual (31 chapters, over 500 pages) for any level of facilty management professional. Each chapter is written by practicing professionals and "expert" consultants. Given that the field of FM covers so many areas, it is useful to have many different perspectives from professionals in the field formed into one big book. Chapters are grouped into phases of FM disciplines, i.e, planning, design, management, technology. There are high level topics such as Strategic Facility Planning, Sustainable Design, Portfolio Management and Business Transformation. Also very detailed, nuts & bolts for topics such as Financial Management for FM's, Energy Management, System Implementation for CMMS (Maintenance systems, Benchmarking, Condition Assessment, and case studies for CAFM technology. Brief chapter summaries are provided to assist reader with content coverage. There are lots of graphics/figures which help readability of this thick book, as well as a CD with websites and templates for RFP's, standards and process related functions.

A bit outdated, but a lot of rich content.
By Tilan Chan
I am a college professor, and one of the course that I teach is Facility Management. This was one of the first books that was required in my course. Its a fairly big book, with a lot of content. I found it to be very informative. There are some sections that need to be updated since this book was published in 2001. My recommendation is that this book should be used as a supplementary text, specially if you're using it to teach.

excellent book !!
By Claudio Bueno
This is by far my favorite book on conduction.Very clear exposition on all topics raging from the classic method of separation of variables to integral transform. However i must warn that this is a book of how to solve partial differential equation of heat conduction. The reader looking for physics explanation should buy the excellent book from arpaci.

Illegible scanned equations and tables; Kindle for Mac application is buggy.
By Travis R Sippel
I'm reading Hahn's Conduction Heat Transfer 2013 textbook. The Bessel function tables in teh back of the book along with numerous other diagrams, equations, etc. are terribly reproduced--low resolution/scan quality. Some equations are illegible. This book was NOT WORTH $90!

First experience using an engineering/scientific textbook through Kindle. I DO NOT RECOMMEND! I am hopeful image/table reproduction quality will improve. Until then I will be purchasing paper copies. The Kindle Mac application is also quite sluggish to respond to mouse clicks / page turns.

Reality Therapy (Theories of Psychotherapy), by Robert E Wubbolding

In Reality Therapy, Robert E. Wubbolding explores the history, theory, research, and practice of this choice-focused approach to psychotherapy. William Glasser first developed the ideas behind reality therapy in the 1950s and 1960s when he formulated the basis of choice theory, which concerns the way human beings choose their own behavior and how these choices can either satisfy or not satisfy basic drives and goals. Using this theoretical basis, reality therapy helps clients to learn to be more aware of their choices and how these choices may be inefficient in achieving their goals. Framing behavior as a choice, a choice made by client's internal control, leads clients to feel more responsible and in command of their lives. Reality therapy is structured around the WDEP system (wants, doing, evaluation, and planning): The reality therapist works with clients to explore their wants and what they are doing to achieve those wants, evaluating whether what they are doing is helpful or harmful to their goals, and finally helping the client plan ways to change their behavior. In this book, Wubbolding presents and explores this approach, its theory, history, therapy process, primary change mechanisms, the empirical basis for its effectiveness, and contemporary and future developments. This essential primer, amply illustrated with case examples featuring diverse clients, is perfect for graduate students studying theories of therapy and counseling, as well as for seasoned practitioners interested in understanding how this approach has evolved and how it might be used in their practice.

An Excellent Book!!
By Stephen King Fan
Reality Therapy (Theories of Psychotherapy)This book is excellent...well worth the read. Dr. Wubbolding has written a wonderfully readable summary of Choice Theory and its use in the practice of Reality Therapy. He presents all of the key points of Choice Theory in an easily understood and succinct manner. He then goes on to explain its application to the practice of Reality Therapy utilizing the WDEP delivery system. Throughout the entirety, he keeps his explanations clear and concise. This book makes both an excellent introduction to the theory, and an equally excellent review of the theory for anyone wishing to "brush up" for an exam, etc. I highly recommend it!

Definitive book on the subject
By Kisle
Written by Robert Wubbolding who was a leading supporter and protege of William Glasser, the father of Reality Therapy, this book explains the core tenets of Reality Therapy in a clear, non-professional language that belies the complexity of the theory. The entire series by the American Psychological Association is a valuable reference for anyone seeking at-hand references that clearly explain the different theories of counseling today.

Informative
By Counselor
Very informative on the practical application of Reality Therapy. Appreciate the fact APA has a video series to compliment. Historical aspect was exciting. Provides a foundation for the theoretical basis.

Iranian Sacred Defence Cinema: Religion, Martyrdom and National IdentityFrom Brand: Sean Kingston Publishing

While the cinema of post-revolutionary Iran is internationally acknowledged, the world outside Iran has been ignorant of the Iranian war films that are the subject of this pioneering book. Over 200 Iranian feature films concentrating primarily on fighting and military operations have appeared since the 1980s and the beginning of the war between Iran and Iraq. This book presents a detailed exploration of the 'Sacred Defence cinema' established by Seyed Morteza Avini, a cinema that directly connects this war to the faith and religious belief of volunteer guardians of the revolution. These films remain the primary vehicles of the Islamic state in Iran for the preservation and memorization of the theme of martyrdom. As the distinguished film scholar, Hamid Dabashi writes in his Foreword to the book: 'If national cinemas are predicated on national traumas, in the volume that Pedram Khosronejad has put together we are at the heart of Iranian cinema.' "The eight-year Iran-Iraq war near the end of the 20th century renewed the horrors of the First World War near the start of the century - causing millions of casualties and untold devastation on both sides. It also resulted in a vigorous and dynamic cinematic output in Iran, producing some of the most ardent Islamist political movies, Shii-inflected spiritual films, and original theorization of what constitutes an 'Islamic cinema'. Khosronejad has managed to amass an astute and fascinating anthology - the first in English - that brings together an international roster of scholars to deal with the complexities and varieties of war fiction films, documentaries, television series and auteur directors." Prof. Hamid Naficy Northwestern University

Alien World Order: The Reptilian Plan to Divide and Conquer the Human Race, by Len Kasten

Shares new documents to expose the sinister alien influence in world governments, financial systems, and scientific institutions throughout history

• Shows how Eisenhower’s treaty with the Greys, signed at Holloman Air Force Base in 1954, gave the aliens authority to abduct humans for "research"

• Reveals how Reptilian-influenced ex-Nazis infiltrated the U.S. government

• Explains how the Reptilians have created alien-human hybrids under their control to replace the human population

Long ago, the Galactic Federation sent the Atlans, a fierce group of humans from the Pleiades, to Earth to confront the newest colony of the combative ever-spreading alien race known as the Reptilians. The ensuing battle sank the continent of Lemuria and drove the Reptilians underground beneath the Indian subcontinent as well as to Antarctica. Able to shapeshift to appear human, the Reptilians then infiltrated the Atlantean civilization, abducting humans and creating Reptilian hybrids. As Len Kasten shows, this technique of infiltration and hybridization prior to an all-out attack has been the hallmark of Reptilian conquest throughout the galaxy.

Chronicling the history of the Reptilian Empire’s influence on Earth and their conquest of 21 star systems, Kasten reveals how the human race is enmeshed in a skillfully concealed plot to enslave humanity and exploit our planet’s physical and biological resources. Revealing Hitler’s pact with extraterrestrials and the Reptilian influence on the Nazi state, he shares new documents that disclose the rescue and rehabilitation of Nazi war criminals to assist in the Cold War, which then corrupted many U.S. government institutions. Focusing on crucial events in the decade after World War II, he examines the Reptilians’ human allies, the Illuminati, who control the levers of financial, technological, and military power throughout the world through various secret societies. He shows how Eisenhower’s treaty with the Greys, signed at Holloman Air Force Base in 1954, gave the aliens permission to take humans up to their spaceships, ostensibly for genetic study--in return for alien technology--and how these abductions led to the creation of a hybrid race under Reptilian mind control. He also explains how Kennedy was assassinated by the CIA because of his plans to rout out this Nazi–Reptilian presence.

Contrasting the Reptilians with the benevolent Ebens, the aliens from Zeta Reticuli who crashed at Roswell, Kasten exposes the stealthy tactics of the Reptilians, their relationship with the Greys, and their advanced genetic bio-technology and teleportation abilities--as well as what we need to do to defeat their plans.

Review
“In Alien World Order, Len Kasten provides a coherent account of the history and imperialistic activities of Reptilian extraterrestrials on Earth and the Milky Way galaxy over millennia, using the work of Robert Morning Sky, Stuart Swerdlow, Alex Collier, and other primary sources. The scope of Reptilian influence over human elites and society is breathtaking and provides an explanation for many of the historical ills afflicting humanity. Kasten peels back the layers of secrecy even further to reveal the dire situation we collectively face today--where our political leaders are vassals for imperialistic Reptilian aliens--and the need for an informed citizenry to take back their sovereign destiny.” (Michael E. Salla, Ph.D., author)

“Veteran UFO researcher Len Kasten has built a terrifying scenario of his findings about the aliens’ historical background and their future intent to control Earth. Along with different alien types, Kasten’s book focuses on the often reported reptilian-like beings and their nefarious plans. This book should be read by all those concerned with putting the pieces of the alien puzzle together.” (David M. Jacobs, Ph.D., American historian and author)

“Len Kasten’s Alien World Order makes a compelling, well-documented case for the historical and ongoing competition between the Reptilian Draco Empire, with its program of hate, and the Galactic Federation, with its program of love. I urge you to read this book; the more of us who do, the more likely we’ll prevail against the Dracos and, with help from the Galactics, lift Earth to a planet of peace, cooperation, and encouragement for all.” (Sasha (Alex) Lessin, Ph.D., author of Anunnaki: Gods No More)

“Len Kasten has courageously pieced together a lost history that goes far beyond our current understanding of who we are and where we come from. He has mapped out a new cosmology that takes us back to the stars, revealing the hidden stories of our galactic history, which include the cast, characters, and politics involved. The information within these pages allows us to take a giant leap forward to a deeper knowing that has always been encoded within our DNA. This hidden history has been patiently waiting to be revealed when we are ready to face the deep spiritual and psychological questions that arise from this knowing. Are you ready?” (Jason Quitt, coauthor of Forbidden Knowledge)

“As always, Len Kasten writes in an articulate, thoughtful, and compelling manner. Alien World Order presents a profound and cohesive ‘look behind the scenes’ at the massive, sinister alien agenda that is interwoven with planet Earth’s long history. I highly recommend Len’s new book!” (Edward T. Martin, author of King of Travelers: Jesus’ Lost Years in India)

“Len Kasten has his hand on the pulse of historical truth regarding the most denied reality on planet Earth today.” (Carrie L’Esperance, author of Soul Breathing: Spiritual Light and the Art of Self-Mastery)

“A psychedelic overview of the alien agenda. From ancient aliens to the New World Order and secret space programs--it’s all here in a rip-roaring read.” (Xaviant Haze, author of Aliens in Ancient Egypt)

INTRODUCTION

From Prophecy to Reality

Star Wars

It has now been well established that the extraterrestrials inclusively referred to as the “Reptilians,” or alternately the “Reptiloids,” have been living here on earth for thousands of years, and that they consider the Earth to be their ancestral home, since they claim that they were the original occupants in prehistoric times. They were contemporaneous with the dinosaurs, who were also reptilian-based creatures, which means that they supposedly lived on the surface of Earth between 200 million and 65 million years ago, at which time the dinosaurs became extinct. That period, known as the Jurassic Age, is based on carbon dating, which is notoriously unreliable. There is contrary evidence that the age of the dinosaurs may have been no more than one million years ago. We do know that the Reptilians preceded the appearance of the human race on this planet. It is believed that they came here from planets in the Draco star system. Draco is approximately 300 light-years from our solar system.

The humans in this galaxy were predominantly concentrated in the Lyra star system. The Draco and their allies in Orion and Rigel attacked and enslaved the inhabitants of planets in twenty-one star systems in this sector of the galaxy, while the humans in the Lyra system established peaceful and flourishing civilizations based on agriculture, on several planets. Then the Draco, having developed fearsome weapons, invaded the Lyra system. The Lyran humans, essentially peace loving, were not prepared for such a massive invasion. The Draco utterly destroyed three Lyran planets: Bila, Teka, and Merok. Fifty million were slaughtered. The Lyran survivors fled to other star systems, primarily Arcturus, Antares, the Pleiades, Cygnus Alpha, Alpha Centauri, Cassiopa, and the Andromeda galaxy, creating a human diaspora in this galaxy as well as in Andromeda. According to Andromedan contactee Alex Collier in his book Defending Sacred Ground:

As the human race fragmented, the races moved, traveled, and settled many different planets in many systems as space travel evolved. The human became aware of other planetary civilizations in these systems. Different cultures met and grew. Belief systems clashed or spread. New thoughts of Philosophy or technologies came into being. Mankind was evolving. A very strong social community developed between all in [from] the Lyra.

Human colonies developed in 110 different star systems, most having space-faring technology. They banded together to form the Galactic Federation and jointly learned to repel Reptilian invasions. In this, the Sol solar system, they colonized Mars and a large planet between Mars and Jupiter called “Maldek.” The Reptilians came and destroyed Maldek as they had the Lyran planets. It exploded into fragments, which became the Asteroid Belt. As their planet-sized Death Star passed Mars, it stripped the planet of its atmosphere, forcing the humans on Mars to take refuge underground.

The Humans Fight Back

On Earth, the Reptilians colonized the continent of Lemuria, which was tropical and occupied most of the Pacific Ocean at that time. The Federation fought back. They sent a fierce human refugee race from Lyra, then inhabiting a planet in the Pleiades, to Earth. They were known as the Atlans. The Atlans built a high civilization with space-faring technology and sophisticated weaponry on the continent of Atlantis in the mid-Atlantic. They bombarded Lemuria with electromagnetic pulse weapons, and the entire continent sank beneath the Pacific Ocean. The Reptilians retreated underground. They took over a massive underground multi-level cave and tunnel system beneath the Indian subcontinent stretching from central Tibet, near Lake Manasarovar, to northeast India, near what ultimately became Benares and then Varanasi on the banks of the Ganges. There they established their underground capital city of Bhogovita. This civilization was referred to as “Patala” or “Snakeworld” by the surface natives. It became known as the home of the “Nagas” or “serpent people.” Another group of Reptilians remained under Antarctica, which then had a moderate climate.

The Reptilians learned how to shapeshift to appear human, and they infiltrated the Atlantean civilization of prehistoric humans who were blonde-haired and blue-eyed. They abducted humans and created Reptilian hybrids. This technique of infiltration and hybridization of another civilization prior to an all-out attack has been the hallmark of Reptilian conquest right up to the present day. The infiltrators slowly get control of the levers of power in the targeted population, and the enemy becomes weakened from within. It was used very effectively by their protgs, the Nazis, prior to World War II when it was called “the Fifth Column,” and Fifth Columnists were sent to Europe and America in the mid-thirties. This term was coined in 1937 by Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, who claimed he would attack with four columns. The fifth column had already infiltrated the enemy ranks. As will be seen later, this same time-tested Reptilian technique is being implemented in America today. The Atlanteans discovered the deception and began pointing their weapons downward. Ultimately, this caused Atlantis to sink beneath the Atlantic, one segment at a time.

Then, the Reptilians unleashed an experimental “super weapon,” which caused the poles to shift. A Reptilian woman called Lacerta, interviewed on YouTube, says that this was some sort of “fusion bomb.” The final part of Atlantis sank in one night. Antarctica became a frozen wasteland, and the Gobi turned into a desert. This was probably the event that wiped out the dinosaurs. The Atlanteans had been given adequate notice by their prophets and had migrated to Egypt, the Mediterranean, and Central and South America. Psychic Edgar Cayce called this the migration of “The Children of the Law of One.”

Kasten brings it all together
By Robin Landry
Len Kasten's book pulls together nearly everything I've ever read about the hidden history of the human race. As unbelievable as sounds; from reptilians who live underground and control our minds with religion, politics and money, anyone can see the effect these institutions have on us, leading us into wars that seem to have no end. Who are our true ancestors? Kasten tells us that humans came from the Lyra star system where they lived peacefully until the reptilians showed up and destroyed three planets. The Lyrans escaped to the Plieadians where they live today, and you can find their channeling all over the internet.
To stop the constant wars between the reptilians and the humans, our 'parents', the Founders/Elohim, whatever you want to call them, decided to make Earth a free will zone, and 22 different aliens contributed their DNA to developing a species to live on Earth. Now you have ancient enemies sharing a body to incarnate into. It's an amazing idea, and probably too far-fetched for most people to even consider, but the cross breeding is why we the 'cross' is so prevalent in our culture. We literally are a cross of reptilian and human, or as some would say, we have an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other giving us advice. We are contantly battling with ourselves, which is what this book is about. Why we're always at war, what our true history is, and where it's all leading.
Kasten has done a great job using all of the information out there and putting it all together in an easy to understand way. This book is amazing and I'm going to read his previous book next. Excellent research and quite believeable. Very impressive.

Interesting Read
By JDO
Mr. Kasten has written a book about the Reptilians that gives a great summary of who they are, and it makes me want to know more. He has made a strong contribution in this arena, and I (hopefully) look forward to reading a sequel in which he shares additional information. Thank you Mr. Kasten.

... another one of those books where crazy people act like they are channeling
By waterguy
This is another one of those books where crazy people act like they are channeling. but whats worse is it isn't the author "channeling"---its somebody else and he is just writing it down. ugh!!!!!
Mr. Kasten compiled many different things related to the now in this book---he is all over the place and I actually like that aspect---but the channeling stuff got a little ridiculous.

Waiting for Godot - Bilingual: A Bilingual Edition, by Samuel Beckett

From an inauspicious beginning at the tiny Left Bank Thtre de Babylone in 1953, followed by bewilderment among American and British audiences, Waiting for Godot has become one of the most important and enigmatic plays of the past fifty years and a cornerstone of twentieth-century drama. As Clive Barnes wrote, “Time catches up with genius. . . . Waiting for Godot is one of the masterpieces of the century.” Beckett wrote the play in French and then translated it into English himself. In doing so he chose to revise and eliminate various passages. With side-by-side text, the reader can experience the mastery of Beckett’s language and explore its nuances. Upon being asked who Godot is, Samuel Beckett told director Alan Schneider, “If I knew, I would have said so in the play.” Although we may never know who we are waiting for, in this special edition we can rediscover one of the most poignant and humorous allegories of our time.

Review

“One of the true masterpieces of the century.” —Clive Barnes, The New York Times

“One of the most noble and moving plays of our generation, a threnody of hope deceived and deferred but never extinguished; a play suffused with tenderness for the whole human perplexity; with phrases that come like a sharp stab of beauty and pain.”
—The Times (London)

“Beckett is an incomparable spellbinder. He writes with rhetoric and music that . . . make a poet green with envy.” —Stephen Spender

“Reading Beckett for the first time is an experience like no other in modern literature.”
—Paul Auster

“[Godot is ] among the most studied, monographed, celebrated and sent-up works of modern art, and perhaps as influential as any from the last century. The nonstory of two tramps at loose ends in a landscape barren of all but a single tree, amusing or distracting themselves from oppressive boredom while they wait for a mysterious figure who never arrives, the play became the ur-text for theatrical innovation and existential thought in the latter half of 20th century.” —Christopher Isherwood, The New York Times

About the Author
Samuel Beckett (1906-1989), one of the leading literary and dramatic figures of the twentieth century, was born in Foxrock, Ireland and attended Trinity University in Dublin. In 1928, he visited Paris for the first time and fell in with a number of avant-garde writers and artists, including James Joyce. In 1937, he settled in Paris permanently. Beckett wrote in both English and French, though his best-known works are mostly in the latter language. A prolific writer of novels, short stories, and poetry, he is remembered principally for his works for the theater, which belong to the tradition of the Theater of the Absurd and are characterized by their minimalist approach, stripping drama to its barest elements. In 1969, Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and commended for having 'transformed the destitution of man into his exaltation.' Beckett died in Paris in 1989.

TOWARD A THEOLOGY OF WAITING: BILINGUAL BECKETT
By Love Thy Enemy
This review refers to the recent and very welcome bilingual edition of En attendant Godot.

Originally written in French as a break while Mr. Beckett tackled his obscure and thick novel writing in exile within southern France from occupied Paris (where he served in the Resistance until directly threatened; please the excellent biography Samuel Beckett: A Biography), Waiting for Godot became one of the most influential plays of the Twentieth Century.

Grove Press early cornered the American market for Beckett, its wisest and most respected publications. Here Grove Press and Les Editions de Minuit graciously combine copyrights to publish this important bilingual edition.

This edition contains only the barest of introductions, basically the English textual genesis with little background. For instance we do not read in this introduction how barely authorized, if at all, was the Miami production with the great Bert Lahr, a production one wishes deeply might have been recorded in some media, yet we read the cast of characters twice. We do not read of several other influential and important productions, including the full story of those directed by Mr. Beckett himself, not the prison productions. I certainly wish this play could be produced as written with a quartet of sextagenarians.

We have here in this introduction only the barest of bones of some textual variants, with a very brief bibliogrpahy.

Yet not much more is needed. The history and meaning have been deeply discussed in other publications, including several available here upon the amazon. For those who wish to learn the "back story" of Didi and Gogo, we may read the entertaining Beckett novel Mercier and Camier; also recommended for beginners is his intriguing first novel Murphy By Samuel Beckett.

What counts here is this bilingual edition, presenting face to face, line by line, the two languages, English and French, in which this play was written by Beckett.

The left hand page presents the original French text; the right hand page presents what the introduction indicates is the most authentic English translation available. This presents us with several advantages, and not only in bilingual education or sencond language instruction. We see here more broadly the intent of the author.

This therefore is a very important copy to have and to study, in this generous and easily readable Grove bilingual edition, durably hardcovered.

We each of us wait for Godot. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe we will forget.

Read here and remember.

One of the masterworks of the 20th century - but should be seen as well as read
By Robert Moore
First, a word about editions. This edition of Waiting for Godot - Bilingual: A Bilingual Edition replaces the earlier English-only edition of Waiting for Godot: A Tragicomedy in Two Acts (Beckett, Samuel). The latter, though with occasional changes of covers, has long been the standard edition of the play in English. It features Beckett's translation of the play in English, and nothing else. But Grove is replacing it with this parallel version, which will feature the French original alongside Beckett's translation into English. This new edition also features an introduction, which the earlier edition lacks.

Too many people forget that this is a PLAY, i.e., something that provides words for actors on a stage. It is not primarily intended to be read in a book. Unfortunately, this is how most people experience the play, therefore depriving them of most of elements of the performance. Therefore, I am going to make a recommendation for a way of increasing the richness of your performance of the play. Too many people forget that this is a PLAY, i.e., something that provides the words for actors on a stage. It is not primarily intended to be read in a book. Unfortunately, this is how most people experience the play, therefore depriving them of most of elements of the performance. Therefore, I am going to make a recommendation for a way of increasing the richness of your performance of the play.

Though an Irishman, Beckett originally wrote the play - as he did with almost all of his works - in French first and then later translated them himself into English (in contrast, Vladimir Nabokov after moving to the United States wrote his books in English, and then translated them into French and Russian, his wife doing the translations into German). The play was originally performed in Paris, while the English-language premiere took place in Ireland. The American debut was not on Broadway, but in Miami, Florida, with Bert Lahr and Tom Ewell.

Instead of merely reading the play, read it while listening to a recording of the original Broadway production of Waiting For Godot, which starred Bert Lahr (best known as the Cowardly Lion in THE WIZARD OF OZ) as Estragon and E. G. Marshall as Vladimir. While you still wouldn't get the visual dimension of the play, hearing the actors bring the characters to life adds new layers to the play that you would never get merely by reading it. Lahr was an unexpected choice to star in the play, given that he wasn't an actor so much as a vaudevillian comedian. His acting style was too over-the-top to be convincing in film (though perfect for the Cowardly Lion); I read somewhere - I don't recall where - that he was more like a cartoon character incarnated than a human. He nonetheless gives a marvelous performance here. Marshall was one of the most distinguished stage actors of his generation and more than holds his own with Lahr while acting as more the straight man.

If you listen to the recording while reading the book, the performance that will most come to life is that of Lucky. I'd read the play 2 or 3 times over the years and seen it once on the stage in which I now realize was a rather tame production, but had not really paid much attention to Lucky. His main contribution was a single, very long speech (not terribly unlike the long speech given by The Fireman in Ionesco's THE BALD SOPRANO in terms of length and its absurdity - a speech that I gave in a college performance of the play). Read on the page it can seem interesting and silly, but hearing the actor (though it wasn't indicated in the recording, Alvin Epstein played Lucky in the original Broadway production and it is almost certainly him here) perform the speech is revelatory. He doesn't say the words so much as shriek, yelp, gasp, bark, and screech them. Hearing Lucky's speech performed by a talented actor transforms your appreciation of both the speech and the play.

This is one of the truly great works of the 20th Century, one of the key plays making up what Martin Esslin dubbed The Theatre of the Absurd, but it is not best experienced by reading it on the page. Try to see it performed instead, or at bare minimum in the Bert Lahr/E. G. Marshall version noted above. You wouldn't think that you had experienced a Bob Dylan song merely by reading the lyrics, and so also you won't experience WAITING FOR GODOT unless you hear or see it performed.

Review of Play: Waiting for Godot - A Tragicomedy in Two Acts

Written in: 1949

Premiere in: 1953

By: Samuel Beckett (1906 - 1989)

Originally written in French and translated to English by the author himself.

This play takes place on a desolate road next to a barren tree. There are two aimless men loitering and passing the time in discussion. They are soon joined by two others. The first act of the play lasts through one evening. The second act lasts through a second evening almost identical to the first. When ever the subject of leaving their spot arises, we learn that they can't leave because they are "Waiting for Godot" and need to stay at this particular spot on the road.

There is a sense of timelessness. The second evenings (second act) seems to be slightly altered copy of the first evening (first act). The characters are "Waiting for Godot" and for salvation. Their wait for salvation might well be endless since all of them are loath to face their true motives, their real needs, their personal wants and honest desires. They don't seem to know why they are "Waiting for Godot" or what Godot (God?) will bring them. When they mention suicide they flippantly dismiss the subject. One time they say they can not hang themselves because they have no rope when in fact there is a rope lying on the stage as one of the few props.

They appear to have voluntarily subjected themselves to a purgatory and don't have the courage or initiative to even question their situation.

The discussion ranges from an inane account of boots being too tight to sophistic meanderings on the purpose of life. The characters seem to relentlessly keep talking to avoid facing something. We are not privy to any of their pasts or in fact any personal information about any of the characters. They might have been meeting on the desolate road for an endless time, so that any past that they had is lost in the mist of their memories.

The nearly barren tree reminds them of a hanging tree and by implication a crucifixion cross. The tree dominates the stage background just as Godot dominates the lives; free choice and every expression of the four main characters. Does the milieu force the characters to think of salvation to the exclusion of a meaningful life? Could their need for salvation keep them trapped in a purgative existence where escape would be a form of condemnation which none of them could tolerate?

The play "Waiting for Godot" forces the reader to ask questions of himself/herself.
