Mallika has been cursed since before she existed, doomed to achieve victory in a battle predestined for her before her mortal body ever graced the planet, and she couldn’t be further from her natural place in society. An average orphan fisher girl roaming the streets of Delhi aimlessly scrounging for the bare necessities, it is on a catastrophic night in 1749 on the shipping docks that she realises something isn’t quite right. The original Dracula is on the hunt, but not on his daily rounds, for something far more sinister. Though Dracula has existed since the dawn of time, the Enchanted Texts have forewarned him of the need for The Vampire Queen to ensure his success.

Her brothers, Adrinius and Zacchaeus have decided to wage war in the place they first reared their venomous independence, in the ancient Puritan civilization, current day Boston Massachusetts. Now 2010, Mallika must defeat her brothers in their murderous rampage the way her father and uncle would have wanted. Although she has a compatriot in the most amazing form, a werewolf, neither she or the werewolf is aware of it. Dracula has warned his daughter of the dangers of werewolves, vampires’ natural predators, as being the only creatures on Earth that can annihilate a vampire within seconds. When in their natural forms, nothing is more imperative than obliterating the other.

Her brothers’ extreme power and their age make them formidable opponents. Along the way, she meets Levi, and they have an instant undeniable attraction. Mallika tries to control her dangerous urges at wanting to transform him, reprimanding herself on the dangers of mortal and vampire relations, but something is not quite human about Levi Hemming-Woods. Is Levi really on her side, or has he been placed in Mallika’s life for a more ominous purpose by her brothers?

The Last True Blood tracks Mallika’s fight for justice even when torn with family sentiments for her blood brothers, her undeniable spirit in completing her duty as set forth by her father, and her unquenchable desire for love with a boy called Levi, even when she believes it may be wrong.

Bad Feminist: Essays, by Roxane Gay

New York Times Bestseller

A collection of essays spanning politics, criticism, and feminism from one of the most-watched young cultural observers of her generation, Roxane Gay.

“Pink is my favorite color. I used to say my favorite color was black to be cool, but it is pink—all shades of pink. If I have an accessory, it is probably pink. I read Vogue, and I’m not doing it ironically, though it might seem that way. I once live-tweeted the September issue.”

In these funny and insightful essays, Roxane Gay takes us through the journey of her evolution as a woman (Sweet Valley High) of color (The Help) while also taking readers on a ride through culture of the last few years (Girls, Django in Chains) and commenting on the state of feminism today (abortion, Chris Brown). The portrait that emerges is not only one of an incredibly insightful woman continually growing to understand herself and our society, but also one of our culture.

Bad Feminist is a sharp, funny, and spot-on look at the ways in which the culture we consume becomes who we are, and an inspiring call-to-arms of all the ways we still need to do better.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, August 2014: "These essays are political and they are personal," Roxanne Gay announces in the introduction of Bad Feminist. "They are, like feminism, flawed, but they come from a genuine place." This place, as displayed throughout the course of her excellent essay collection, is also one of daring intelligence, imagination, and empathy. Gay leads by example. To combat the demeaning stereotype that feminists are humorless, Gay imbues her essays with levity. One of the best pieces comes early in the book when Gay competes in a Scrabble tournament and her success as a beginner angers her male opponents. It's smart and laugh-out-loud funny essay, and in a humbling turn, Gay herself finds a similar unwarranted frustration toward competitors when she begins losing. Bad Feminist represents Gay's body of personal essays and critical work over the past several years, and if the book has a slight misstep, it's that it sometimes feels like these are articles that have been published elsewhere. (For example, Gay's takedown of The Help is extraordinary, but the same arguments return repeatedly in pieces about other films.) Still, this is such a small complaint in a rare collection where each and every piece is vital and the book as a whole feels important. --Kevin Nguyen

“As a feminist who has been around a while I have a message for these girls: it’s okay — you can skip the rigors of Betty Friedan and Andrea Dworkin and go straight to Roxane Gay, where feminism is not just friendly, but more relevant than ever.” (Erika Schickel, Los Angeles Review of Books)

“What’s so special about this collection is its accessibility - Gay is nothing short of a critical genius, yet every essay is approachable and open while still being thorough. Her writing is rare, and at that, not to be missed.” (Bustle)

“I’m pretty sure Gay is incapable of writing anything boring. . . . Even better: It’s an essay collection, so you can parse it out, maybe save a couple for days when the Internet is particularly infuriating.” (Jezebel)

“Blunt and funny. . . . [Gay acknowledges] ‘I am a mass of contradictions.’ For Gay, though, these contradictions are less a condition to be remedied than a source of greater strength.” (Washington Post)

Gay’s essays are intimate and accessible, but broad in scope and deep in insight.” (Celeste Ng, "Writers’ favorite books of 2014," San Francisco Gate)

“If you’re in the mood to read wonderful, thought-provoking essays that feel like they’re written by your best friend, check out Bad Feminist. . . . Gay puts you at ease as she shakes the foundations of what you believe.” (Buzzfeed, Sami Main, "28 Best Books by Women in 2014")

I wanted to like this book
By Char King
I wanted to like this more than I did. At first I loved it. I felt like I related to Roxane Gay a lot. As the book went on, a lot of the essays seemed just to complain about many things in pop culture. I'd like to say she "critiqued" many things in pop culture, but it really seemed more like complaining after a while. It kind of droned about the things she doesn't like (like I'm doing right now--this is not lost on me, haha) without much insight into where those feature of our culture come from or how we can improve. It's not like she's not a great thinker, I just don't think it came through very well in some parts of the book. The first half was 5 stars, second half was 1 star.

It's always a struggle to find that perfect feminist stance
By C.Erickson
I didn’t know what to expect when opening a book entitled, “Bad Feminist.” I certainly didn’t expect to read about Gay’s devotion to the Sweet Valley High book series, or her obsession with competitive Scrabble, or her enjoyment of the Hunger Games books despite their literary pitfalls. She offers these reflections alongside essays lamenting violence against women and the LGBT community, and the depressing persistence of rape culture and racism. The latter essays tend to be gritty, factual, intensely-layered with a complex and nuanced perspective; they showcase her ability to imbibe culture in all its forms—media, news, movies, literature—and lay it out for us to see, think about, and agree or disagree with. In one notable essay, “The Solace of Preparing Fried Foods and Other Quaint Remembrances from 1960s Mississippi: Thoughts on The Help”, Gay bemoans the ever-lingering trope of the “magical negro” and its presence in movies and popular literature. She writes: “In The Help, there are not one but twelve or thirteen magical negroes who use their mystical powers to make the world a better place by sharing their stories of servitude and helping Eugenia ‘Skeeter’ Phelan grow out of her awkwardness and insecurity into a confident, racially aware, independent career woman. It’s an embarrassment of riches for fans of the magical negro trope” (Pg. 210). When I read this, other movies came to mind, such as The Green Mile, in which the person of color, John Coffey, significantly improves the lives of the white people in his life but doesn’t save himself from being put to death by electrocution. Coffey brings animals back to life and sucks cancer from a white woman’s body, accepting it not without distress and pain to his own person, and reassures the whites around him that he is ready to die, and in fact wants to die. Gay wishes for a day when people of color play characters other than a slave or a “magical negro” or a combination of the two; she wishes for a day when the script has a person of color performing significant acts for their own destiny and not for someone else.

In a world where people think increasingly in absolutist claims, such as We versus Them, and use increasingly simplified and stunted language that can hardly do justice to the many ways life is lived, Gay’s writing forces the reader to consider the infinite shades of gray that exist in the world beyond the black and white, and demands through her logic that people be allowed to thrive in a variety of lifestyles, modes, and cultures and be respected and loved—despite religion, skin color, gender, chosen life paths, and level of so-called femininity.

Isn’t this book about being a bad feminist? Yes, but Gay’s views of herself, what feminism means for her and what she thinks it should mean today are intertwined with her ruminations on literature and culture. There’s not just one right way to be a feminist; there’s the way of being who you are, plus feminism, and then you can be both, even if it doesn’t quite fit in the lines of what the perceived perfect feminist might be (for instance, Gay likes the color pink). As if sighing at the end of a lengthy conversation, she says in her last essay: “I am a mess of contradictions.” We are all; yet few of us are strong enough to admit it.

Not Quite What I Was Expecting, But a Good Intro to Feminism
By Melissa Selzer
Overall, this book of essays is a great introduction to feminism. The beginning sets a great tone, but I felt the book didn't quite live up to my expectations. What I enjoyed most is the how she tries to abolish the old ideas of being a feminist. What I didn't like is I wanted more of her, but she discusses pop culture too often for my liking. This is the very reason why I think it's a good start for anybody to talk about what it means to be a feminist. I was hoping for a bit more than I got here, but I feel like the discussions in my book club in regards to this book were fruitful.

Miracle on the Hudson: The Extraordinary Real-Life Story Behind Flight 1549,

The remarkable true story ofChesley“Sully” Sullenberger’s heroic crash landing in the Hudson River, as told by the passengers who owe him their lives.

Millions watched the aftermath on television, while others witnessed the event actually happening from the windows of nearby skyscrapers. But only 155 people know firsthand what really happened on U.S. Airways Flight 1549 on January 15, 2009. Now, for the first time, the survivors detail their astounding, terrifying, and inspiring experiences on that freezing winter day in New York City. Written by two esteemed journalists, Miracle on the Hudson is the entire tale from takeoff to bird strike to touchdown to rescue, seen through the eyes and felt in the souls of those on board the fateful flight.

Revealing many new and compelling details, Miracle on the Hudson dramatically evokes the explosion and "smell of burning flesh" as both engines were destroyed by geese, the violent landing on the river that felt like a "huge car wreck," the gridlock in the aisles as the plane filled swiftly with freezing water, and the thrill of the passengers' rescue from the wings and from rafts—all of it recalled by the "cross section of America" on board.

Jay McDonald, a thirty-nine-year-old software developer, had survived brain-tumor surgery just two years earlier and now faced the unimaginable.

Tracey Wolsko, a nervous flier, suddenly became other people's rock: "Just pray. It's going to be all right." Jim Whitaker, a construction executive, reassured a nervous mother of two young children on board, only later admitting, "I was pathologically lying the whole time." As the plane started sinking, Lucille Palmer, eighty-five, told her daughter to save herself: "Just leave me!"

Featuring much more than what the media reported—moments of chaos in addition to stoicism and common sense, and the fortuitous mistakes and quick instincts that saved lives that otherwise would have been lost—Miracle on the Hudson is the chronicle of one of the most phenomenal feel-good stories of recent years, one that could have been a nightmare and instead became a stirring narrative of heroism and hope for our times.

From Publishers Weekly
In a stunning display of skill and steely nerves, pilot Chesley Sullenberger managed a Hudson River water landing in freezing weather, with no engines, to save the lives of every single person aboard his aircraft. Aided by New York and New Jersey emergency responders steeped in post-9/11 training, Sullenberger and his crew did everything right when everything around them had gone horribly wrong. Interviewing survivors of flight 1549, husband-and-wife journalists Prochnau and Parker piece together a detailed, moment-by-moment account of the accident and its aftermath, getting inside the heads of ordinary people who demonstrated remarkable courage and humanity. Anyone who remembers the dramatic 2009 event will be riveted by this account, even with a forgone happy conclusion. Notably absent is the testimony of Captain Sullenberger, who saved his insights for his own book, Highest Duty, but this passengers'-eye-view narrative makes an absorbing, inspirational record.

From Booklist
So far, in the publication of books about the dramatic ditching of US Airways Flight 1549, the pilot has told his story (Chesley Sullenberger’s Highest Duty, 2009); the plane has had its story told (William Langewiesche’s Fly by Wire, 2009); and now most of the passengers tell their tales. Veteran journalists, the authors interviewed 118 of the 150 people onboard (but not the flight crew). Like the proverbial witnesses to a traffic accident, none, it seems, saw the same thing despite experiencing the same in-flight emergency, so fear and confusion in the passenger cabin are the dominating continuity in Prochnau and Parker’s narrative. It is otherwise as kaleidoscopic as temperament and life experience make any collection of strangers. Some naturally made indelible impressions by their reactions to what seemed like imminent death: men cravenly shoving their way to the exits; others gallantly assisting the evacuation. These accounts of how people behaved will certainly prompt readers to imagine how they might have responded, so expect great interest in the audience that actually heard the words, “This is the captain. Brace for impact!” --Gilbert Taylor

Passengers of Flight 1549 Tell Their 'Miracle on the Hudson' Stories
By David Kinchen
'Miracle on the Hudson': Survivors of US Airways Flight 1549 Recount Their Stories of the Famous Crash

Reviewed By David M. Kinchen

The news coverage of the 'Miracle on the Hudson' of Jan. 15, 2009 has focused on Capt. Chesley B. (Sully) Sullenberger's skillful landing of his 75-ton Airbus A320 on the Hudson River after bird strikes knocked out both his engines.

A month after the landing, a Greenwich Village pub, the Half Pint, created a cocktail honoring the heroic captain, "The Sully," which consists of two shots of Grey Goose vodka and "a splash of water." And, as noted below, he has his own book about the "Miracle" and his life before and after it.

"Miracle on the Hudson: The Survivors of Flight 1549 Tell Their Extraordinary Stores of Courage, Faith, and Determination" (Ballantine Books, 272 pages, $25.00) by William Prochnau and Laura Parker gives Sully his due, as well as First Officer (co-pilot) Jeffrey Skiles, who saw the flock of geese first, moments before Sully, who took over the controls. "Miracle" concentrates on the experiences and backgrounds of the passengers, 108 of whom were interviewed by the two reporters. The 108 were among the 155 passengers and crew on board the Charlotte, NC-bound U.S. Airways flight that frigid January afternoon.

The year started out with a miracle, with everybody surviving, despite some scary rescue moments, but the authors note that by mid-2009, more than 500 people had died in commercial airline crashes around the world, making it the worst year for aviation fatalities in seven years.

On Feb. 12, a Colgan Air commuter plane crashed near Buffalo, NY, killing all 49 on board and a man on the ground. On June 1, an Air France Airbus A330 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil, killing all 228 on board. A month later, another Airbus, a Yemenia Airlines A310 crashed into the Indian Ocean near the Comoros, killing all but one of the 153 people on board.

Prochnau and Parker are not only meticulous reporters, with their detailed summaries of the backgrounds of the passengers, they're also skilled storytellers; the book reads like a novel, say "The High and the Mighty" published in 1954 and written by the late, great Ernest K. Gann. Or at times like a waterborne disaster like Paul Gallico's "The Poseidon Adventure."

The survivors are a casting director's dream team. There's the obligatory plucky older woman, 85-year-old Brooklyn born Lucille Palmer, headed for her great-grandchild's first birthday. There's Greenwich village architect Martin Sosa and his wife Tess, traveling with a nine-month-old baby and their young daughter. There's the so-called "Belk Six", five women and a man representing the Belk department store chain, returning to Charlotte from a New York buying trip.

We learn of the stresses of "road warrior" bankers -- Charlotte is home to Bank of America and Wachovia -- lawyers and other frequent fliers, some of whom changed their pressure-cooker lives after the events of Jan. 15. One of them, a lawyer, received a message after the rescue that he was being laid off. The actual layoff was delayed until two months later.

At times the authors, Prochnau and Parker -- both of whom have worked for The Washington Post -- seem to be padding out the book with discussions of the financial meltdown and its effects on the workers that weren't laid off. Still, despite this caveat and their sometimes florid prose, "Miracle on the Hudson" is a well-written, moving account of everyday people reacting to an extraordinary event that deserves the phrase bestowed upon it by NY Gov. David Paterson: It was truly a "Miracle on the Hudson."

Sully's book, "Highest Duty: My Search for What Matters," written with Jeffrey Zaslow, was published earlier this month. And on Nov. 10, Vanity Fair international correspondent William Langewiesche, who has written on flying from the perspective of a former professional pilot, will publish his "Fly By Wire: The Geese, the Glide, the 'Miracle' on the Hudson".

Langewiesche, who manages to explain technical matters better than just about any writer I've read, discusses the technology that helped Sully and Skiles accomplish their "miracle."

Which leads me to my pet hobby horse: why can't aviation engineers come up with a grille or screen to keep Canada geese -- which have wingspans of six feet -- and other large birds out of jet engines? My Ford Ranger pickup has a grille to keep objects from damaging the radiator, as does my liquid-cooled Honda Shadow motorcycle. As a matter of fact, there are guards that do just that for jet engines. I don't know if Boeing or Airbus uses them or has plans for them in the future. For a look at one that received a U.S. patent, click on: [...]

Not What I expected!
By Sarah the Reader
In full disclosure someone at my company was on this flight, so I was a bit more interested than the average reader. I've met him once or twice so I was very curious about his experience.

All I can say is "oh my", I truly had no idea how crazy it was on board that flight. I think everyone has some sort of fear of flying, particulary after this past spring when there were some really horrific air disasters. The writers do a good job at putting the reader right inside the plane and in a seat and eventually in the river. You can feel how frightening it was. I dont' think there was a passenger on that plane that didn't think they were going to die. I found it profound to understand all the ideas and thoughts that one thinks about when they believe they are moments away from death. I also found it interesting that most were just hoping for it to be quick and painless; they were more frightened, in some cases, of pain vs. death. Interesting!

I think the early part of the book and then the end are the best. The rescue became a little tedious and some of the story lines had me a bit confused. The seating chart at the beginning was helpful and I kept flipping back to it. (On that note, the photos were good, but I would have liked more. They were not color so that was a miss, this is 2009!) In spite of knowing the ending, I could not put it down. Overall I have to say it was a really good book and I can't wait to recommend. I would have given 5 stars but for some of the middle chapters that were a little messy.

The next time I see that man who works at my company I plan to let him know how much I enjoyed this book, even though he was only mentioned two times.

A true thriller-- amazing it really happened
By Robert L. Twiss
This is one of the best real-life yarns I've read in a long time. Great reporting. Great entertainment. The authors do a fine job of introducing the characters, setting the scene on that icy day, and letting you feel the emotions felt by the passengers on that plane. As a reader, I felt gripped. I almost ralphed at one point. If you love true-action thrillers, this occupies the top 10 of the year.

Rip-off
By M. Mooney
Per my professor, nothing has changed between 4th, 5th, & 6th editions. Publisher is producing unethical reprints. Just buy an older version.

along with the poor structure of the chapters
By Andrew Robinson
This was the textbook for my Negotiation class, and it has some serious flaws in my opinion...

First, the layout is disorganized, and the concepts are often strangely linked and overlap in a way that makes understanding the ideas much more difficult.

Second, there are grammatical mistakes throughout. This, along with the poor structure of the chapters, makes it hard to believe that the book was ever proofread.

There are also some other issues – some ideas seem contradictory in the book since the author compiles findings from many different sources. However, as a result, there is often no clear framework for understanding negotiations more clearly. Facts from other sources are often stated without commentary on how that finding links to strategic frameworks more generally. Again, this relates to the idea of poor organization and overall flow of the book. Definitions of certain terms are often unclear, and even when they are given they are subsequently used in contexts that do not align with the initially given meaning.

Overall, it has some decent insight to improving negotiation abilities; there are also many interesting examples of negotiations throughout (though the applicability to the section those negotiations are in varies). However, the author lacks sufficient ability to coherently structure the ideas in textbook form.

Why You Win or Lose: The Psychology of Speculation, by Fred C. Kelly

2011 Reprint of 1930 Edition. A highly successful speculator shows how to use your skills as an amateur psychologist and a student of human nature to make money through the stock market. Written in a direct and affable style, "Why You Win or Lose" shares the secrets of an "outsider" on Wall Street, offering a valuable study of crowd reaction to market fluctuations. It identifies the four greatest enemies to stock market prosperity, showing how to recognize and avoid these pitfalls in instructive chapters such as "Vanity," "Greed," and "The Will to Believe." Kelly outlines the benefits of "contrary thinking" and illustrates how this style of thinking outside the box can lead not only to lucrative investments but to success in other endeavors as well.

Good Advice in Any Day
By Chip
This short book is interesting from a historical perspective. It consists primarily of the author's reflections and anecdotes, but does not represent any actual research. More modern behavioral studies will provide much more insight. Still, it is a quick read. The key insight is that individual investors tend to follow the crowd, buy peaks and sell bottoms, even when they know better. Kelly advocates thinking for yourself, and above all not being stampeded. Good advice in any day.

A Must Read for Speculators
By Hamilton Collins
A must read for anyone serious about understanding the market. Even though it talks about "pools," we can think of that in terms of fund managers and other big investment groups and get a better understanding of "the story" that charts a telling us. Excellent!

The best book on investing.
By Jonathan BozBeckian
This is the "Joseph of Aramathea" approach to investing. Read the book, read the books Matthew, Mark, Luke & John, think about what he did (he made 4 cameo appearances in each of the books) , observe the conditions he was taking a step forward, and draw your own conclusions.
