Good for newer option traders

I saw that each strategy had about 30 pages of information, so I thought that the depth of discussion would be quite good. Unfortunately, the first 10 pages of each chapter is simply which options make up the strategy. Investopedia does the same job in 1 page. The next 10 pages shows pictures of the greeks, which I did not find very useful. Probably the reason why is that there is not a single options chain in the whole book. The values he picks for his greeks would seem to come out of thin air to the newer trader. Also, the pictures often times do not use the same scaling/pricing as the examples that they are supposed to be describing. Qualitatively, they are good, but it could have been much better if Saliba matched the graphs more tightly to the text. The only parts I liked was the last 10 pages when he talks about adjustments. I have had a tough time finding books about adjustments, and this one gives a good introduction to adjustments. Sometimes though, his advice is not really advice: "If your trade moves against you, then take appropriate actions to protect your capital." What can I do with that? I thought the exercises at the end were trivial. They test you to see if you understood what you read like "What does a short put vertical made of?" I would have rather seen questions about what to do in different situations, but these only make up 10 or 20% of the questions.

Overall, I would describe this book as teaching the newer trader about how options work, but not how to trade them successfully. Saliba avoids complicated math and keeps it simple. As other reviewers have noted, he is perhaps a better teacher than others. However, this is really only an overview of option strategies and does not give enough real-world scenarios to equip the reader to make money by trading options.

No strategies here.

This book was nearly useless to me, which was disappointing since I trade hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of option spreads every month.

The book is obsessed with "the greeks", the partial-derivative relationships between various external factors, like volatility or time to expiration, and the theoretical price of an option or option structure. There are pages upon pages of charts of price-vs-gamma or price-vs-delta of various spread structures--mostly annotated with print so small that it is unreadable, at least in my edition. But there is not a single word explaining how a trader should use these charts to establish or manage trades.

Of all the options books I've ever purchased this was the least useful.

Great book for beginners!

I'm the author of Secrets of Clay Animation Revealed and have read just about every book out there on how to create stop motion films. I'm always trying to learn because after working in the industry - sometimes I get bored reading these sorts of books. That's not the case with Ken Priebes Art of Stop Motion Animation. Even if you are an experienced animator, it's worth buying this book just for the interviews and behind the scenes pictures. At least for me, I can never get enough pictures of the various productions going on out there.

The images are in full color and the book comes with a disk of animation examples to help the reader see final animations of characters within the book. Pretty much everything you need to understand how to animate, create puppets, find a camera, time animation, use exposure sheets, light and finish your film is in the book. It definitely belongs on the bookshelf of every stop motion animator.

The Newbie's guide

First, I must say that the book's cover was designed good enough, and previous reviews in this page, were so appealing that made me expect a little more of stop-motion movie related examples than what I found.

However,basic and rough exercises through the book (and the CD-ROM)are useful enough for any stop- motion beginner to keep him/her motivated without expecting outrageous results.

The book offers also some interesting data through the appendix section. I believe it's a good starting reference, but not outstanding alone.

If you are interested for more in depth stop-motion references, check this other titles available from amazon. I believe you wont be decieved:

Terrific Surprise! Well informed author who gets the points across on all aspects of stop-motion animation

I ordered this book and am very impressed. While on the way to the book store Christmas Eve, with a nasty ear ache, on the phone, and very content, I called the bookstore in advance to pull anything off of the shelf for my purpose. When asked to check for books about stop-motion animation, I was told that there is a book on 'the art of stop-motion animation'. I said order it. There I was driving to the book store to do the usual checking the shelf, to look in the arts section (for my intended mission) on clay animation, or puppets.... anything about stop-motion animation?, I asked. Yes. Order it I said. I have the book now. And I have not put the book down since. My goal is to learn how to make puppets like the one in Rudolph, and all the Rankin & Bass specials. I got a lot more from this book. It is right in line with everyting you will want to know about stop-motion animation. The author has the passion for the art. Extensive background on the history of rare antiquated movies in the art and also contact with very recent directors and producers from movies like 'Corpse Bride' and 'The Night Before Christmas.' Also within this book is golden information from those who have private studios and offer courses with valuable knowledge in the field of puppetry for stop-motion animation. The book is easy to read, very informative from what is needed to film, how to animate, and even interviews with teachers, and Professionals within this field. It is an art that will survive and will continue to, even along side CG (Computer Graphics). It is almost like a class college book,(regarding the lay-out and the interviews with associates-a special bonus added!), yet is so simple to ready. The author speaks like he is talking. It is and continues to be a very special treasure! The author even includes classes one can take a professional colleges. I find it fascinating and one that I will keep.

Hats off to this author!!! Now -- in persuit those who are serious in entrepreneurial venture, or hobby.

Required Reading for Art Lovers

One star for the contents - which really deserves 4 stars - and one star for the condition (only because I can't leave no stars). The seller put it's ISBN sticker over Van Gogh's face - When I tried to remove it it left a tear across his face.
As for the contents - a great book whether you like Van Gogh or not. Vincent's letters to Theo are extensive - and practically record his every thought and feeling (especially about his painting). The only downside is tht they have been heavily edited by Stone.

I could not put the book down. The editing could have been a lot better when it came to when Van Gogh wrote each letter to his brother. I enjoyed googling the names of artists that were Van Gogh's favorites and learning about their styles that inspired him.

Nice insight

It is not as easy a read as Stone's van Gog biography Lust For Life, but for fans, it's a deep book.

Vincent tells of how he went into the fields to paint, and then a rain storm came. He sought meager shelter behind a big tree while it lasted, and then resumed. And because he had started with a low vantage point, he now had to stand on his knees in the mud! He seems to merely mention this to point out why he considers common workman's clothes to be the artist's best friend...

He also tells how he went out to paint the sea, in a storm so strong he could barely stay on his feet. One painting got so full of sand from the beach that he went to a nearby inn and retouched it... and then went back out into the storm to finish it with fresh impressions!

Today, most of us: "Go out with the camera today? Nah, it's a bit nippy, and I just got the Sopranos on DVD..."

Irving Stone edited Dear Theo, and while he may have done a good job generally, I think it was a disservice to the material to not indicate where he cut it. It is just one long text, no dates and no indication where each quote starts or ends.

The definitive textbook on RCM

This book is the definitive textbook on RCM, the result of the accumulated experience of thousands of RCM reviews in nearly every industry and in dozens of countries around the world.
It presents RCM's distinctive "systems" approach to maintenance, offering sophisticated criteria for deciding among four kinds of scheduled tasks (not simply the replacement of individual non-repairable components), and equally sophisticated criteria for deciding among two other kinds of failure management policies (including redesign) if scheduled tasks are not appropriate.
If you wish to do RCM, you need this book plus a mentor to guide your early efforts. (How many of us learned to ride a bicycle without someone holding the handlebars?)
But if you simply wish to understand RCM -- you need this book.

The best RCM textbook ever written

I never cease to be amazed by some of the nonsensical comments we see on the Internet, particularly from people who read a book about an activity that requires complex skills -- discover that they can't do it without help -- and blame the book!
You won't learn to *do* RCM by reading this book, or any book -- just as you won't learn to ride a bicycle by reading a book. You'll learn to *do* it only by *doing* it -- and you'll have fewer spills on your first ride if you have help from someone who has already done it (and who knows how to teach).
But if you're not trying to learn to *do* RCM -- if all you want is to *understand* RCM, its concepts and its principles -- then stop searching and get this book. There isn't a better one out there. I've read the others, and I know.

Highly recommended reading.

In this book, Moubray has revised and brought up to date his seminal 1991 text on Reliability Centered Maintenance. As with the previous text, he clearly and concisely explains the principles behind RCM in an easily understood fashion, without having to resort to complex mathematical explanations. The diagrams and examples given in the text add to the ease of understanding. The major difference between this edition and the previous edition is increased detail and focus in those areas most likely to be of use to those attempting to apply the principles in their workplace. Highly recommended reading for anyone involved in maintenance engineering and maintenance management.

He spent less than a day in each city...

In 1959, Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond books, was paid by the Sunday Times of London to travel for a month to the "world's most exciting cities" and report on them in a series of essays. These essays were anthologized in 1964 under the title "Thrilling Cities."

In just thirty days, Mr. Fleming visited fourteen cities. That gave him just two days in each city, if we assume he was somehow able to travel across continents in the blink of an eye. He wisely did not spend any of his precious time in museums. He did visit the "world's largest brothel" in Macau, bath houses in Tokyo, casinos in Las Vegas and Monte Carol, and, since his guides in each city were the local correspondents for the Sunday Times of London, all the bars where reporters and writers gathered to drink in those days.

Much of what Mr. Fleming recorded has, sometimes sadly and sometimes gladly, long since disappeared, as in this example: "Bahrain is, without question, the scruffiest international airport in the world. The washing facilities would not be tolerated in a prison, and the slow fans in the ceilings of the bedraggled hutments hardly stirred the flies. This is the East one is glad to get through quickly."

Other comments show that the East has not changed that much, as in this comment as his plane flies over Turkey: "From now on, we shall be in the lands of baksheesh, squeeze and graft, which rule from the smallest coolie to the Mr. Bigs in government."

And tucked into the first chapter there is this: "...then down over the rice fields of Burma to the heavenly green pastures of Thailand, spread out among wandering rivers and arrow-straight canals like some enchanted garden. This was the first place of really startling beauty I had so far seen, and the temperature of ninety-two degrees in the shade on the tarmac did nothing to spoil the impact of the country where I would advise other travelers to have their first view of the true Orient. A minute air hostess, smiling the first true smile, as opposed to an air hostess smile, since London, told us to "forrow me."

"In spite of the mosquitoes as large as Messershmitts and the wringing humidity, everyone seems to agree that Bangkok is a dream city, and I blamed myself for hurrying on to Hong Kong. In only one hour, one still got the impression of the topsy-turvy, childlike quality of the country, and an old Siamese hand, a chance acquaintance, summed it up with a recent cutting from a Bangkok newspaper."

Mr. Fleming then goes on to recount the now famous quote in which the Bangkok Police chief encouraged tourists to ask policemen for directions to reputable brothels, so as to avoid victimization by streetwalkers.

Thus an hour is spent in Bangkok in 1959, with just enough time to notice heat, humidity, mosquitoes, and the way women smile. Just one hour in this particular "thrilling city." That the police were willing to guide strangers to prostitutes may have been what made the ageing Mr. Fleming describe Bangkok as a "dream city," but I prefer to think that it was something more subtle, and something which even the casual visitor could absorb in a single hour spent in the airport. Alas, Babylon.

Settings Without Plots

If you love Ian Fleming's James Bond novels for more than being the launching pads of the movies, you may well feel as I do that Fleming was a decent spinner of yarns and a sensational describer of settings. "Thrilling Cities," published in the United States in 1963, is a collection of Sunday newspaper articles in which Fleming wrote about various cities he visited, cities that might well have been settings for Bond adventures.

In this book, in fact, one is. "007 In New York" is a brief story included in this book's New York chapter that features Bond paying a visit to Central Park, but it is not clear whether Fleming wrote it to be canon or a lark. It's easily the lamest Bond story by Fleming, worse even than "Property Of A Lady," and serves only as an alternate means for describing New York.

"007 In New York" is also the weakest part of what is otherwise a very sturdy collection of travel writing. Yes, Fleming made these trips over 45 years ago. Those prices he quotes probably are missing a few zeroes at the end, and most of the establishments he names were shuttered long ago. But Fleming's ability to transport you not only remains in ample evidence, it is now even more impressive as he moves you through space AND time, his appreciation for sensual delight balanced and buttressed by an ever-caustic wit.

Viewing Hong Kong: "The streets of Hong Kong are evidence that neon lighting need not be hideous, and the crowded Chinese ideograms in pale violet and pink and green with a plentiful use of white are entrancing not only for their colors but also because one does not know what drab messages or exhortations they spell out."

Sunbathers in Honolulu: "...these elderly ghouls looked even worse without their muumuus - huge, blue-veined, dimpled thighs, scrawny necks and sagging bosoms garlanded with leis, their broken-down, spavined spouses trailing behind carrying the coconut mats, the sun-tan oil, the bathrobes, and the Wall Street Journal."

Italian drivers: "The amount of noise he can make with his vehicle, particularly via the exhaust pipe, has come in some obscure way to represent a virility symbol, and for the police to pray silence is as vain as to tell Italians not to lend grandeur and emphasis with their hands to the simplest of conversations."

To say that Fleming had a jaundiced, borderline bigot's attitude about the people of the world is not to deny him his engaging tone or his occasional bulls-eyes. In Bond books, one sees this character peeking out in slow moments, like when Bond walks through a hotel lobby or goes fishing as a cover for his real work, discoursing on the uniqueness of wherever in the world Bond is. For many Fleming aficionados, this is what makes Bond books special, even more than the silly names of the heroines or the bizarre plots Bond must foil.

Here, for the only real time, Fleming foregoes the plots and just bathes us in atmosphere, perhaps not a 100% accurate representation of the world as it is now or was then, but the world we imagine ourselves in when reading a Fleming Bond. It's a potent martini of a trip, neither shaken nor stirred, exactly, but very, very neat.

If you like the Bond books

Just remember that you're dealing with Ian Fleming, and it's therefore going to be racist and shot through with sexism and class bigotry on top of that. If you like the Bond books (and I do, very much--I just have to bear in mind when they were written), you know that going in.

However, it's not written as stylishly or as well as the Bond books. It's an unhealthy middle-aged Englishman on a whirlwind tour of a few continents bitching about the weird, shiftless, untrustworthy natives.

For Fleming completists only.
