A marvelous design bible

This is one of those books that satisfies all my needs at once. I've given it 5 stars, but please multiply them by 5. There's absolutely nothing in this book that I can complain about. The only problem is that I bought a lot of other design books in the past; what am I going to do with them now?

First off, I am a very difficult customer. I look at a book from many different angles - especially books that are supposed to teach me something. I usually have a problem or two or more with most books. The cover and the content SEEM of value, but upon opening the book one realizes very quickly that it's just a waste of money. This book, however, explained to me in ONE text everything I ever had to research on the Internet. Then I had to sift through thousands and thousands of results, and this book narrows it down to personal favorites. That's okay - after having read the book written by a pro, it's just very obvious that his preferences and judgement are better than mine.
One of my favorite topics in the book was the discussion about color psychology and text. I've read plenty of books on these - they were all boring and the author explained nothing. In this book it was like having a face-to-face discussion. And, that's only ONE example.

In short: if you're looking for something comprehensive, that teaches you MORE than what it claims, and gives you resources to study, AND teaches you how to look at your own designs critically, then you've found the answer in this book. You can look at something else, but believe me, I've most probably bought them already, and they don't get close to what is offered in this comprehensive package.

Very well done -- the only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I reserve that for stuff that's close to a religious experience. If you're looking for content-oriented discussion, you'd be better served by something like "Keeping Found Things Found", but if you're looking for layout/font/typography stuff, this is right on the money.

Easy to follow and learn from! I got this book because I had to for my college class, however, even if I wasn't mandatory this would be a book I would want to buy to learn about web design! It gets you started and knowledgeable about anything you need to know.

A great practice tool!

This book is excellent for the beginner practicing his or her skills in combining hands and feet and in practice controlling the pedal notes. It's neither too easy nor too hard for working on balance between melody and bass line. Very useful and enjoyable music to play!

Beyond Borders is a collection of readings written by many different activists who want express themselves and inform people. It invites readers to learn about many different topics since each essay written by each person, focuses on a different topic. The stories are intended to inform readers about the globalized world that we live in, and to explain what they do not see happening across the globe. After reading this book, you will understand how bad some of the world issues are, how they started, and the things that are being done to fix the problems. It is designed to help bring up discussion about the different points of over the topics, and to expand the knowledge and perspectives.
The book contains so many points of view so the reader may not agree with every statement. I starts with putting things in perspective; it talks about colonialism, differences between places and people, patriarchy domination, poverty and inequality, the economy, globalization in general, and about the movements for social change. It is an intellectual read that will educate you on all of these topics not only by stating the facts about things, but making the reader create an opinion for themselves after hearing many sides. It is interesting to hear the stories of people across the globe and not just what goes on in our country or around us.
I thought it was an interesting, yet difficult book to read because of different aspects. Every part is written by a different person over different topics, making it hard to keep up with what you are reading. There were many things that I had no idea were happening in our world, therefore, I found it to be extremely informative. It definitely expanded by knowledge in many different directions and though it was hard to read, I really enjoyed it. It really made me view the world in a different way with all the evidence it had for each point. I would definitely recommend this book to people who wish to learn about many topics.

Outdated, but Gets the Job Done

I needed this book for a Society and Social Issues class that I am taking this summer.

What was fun about this book is that it introduces the reader to many topics and many social issues. Each story in this collection is written by a different author so that the reader is exposed to many viewpoints. Each story in the collection is well-written and easy to connect to. The writers use real-world examples and provide sources for their ideas rather than making claims. I also noticed that within many of the stories, there are personal stories of people that are experiencing the issue that is being addressed.

A major thing that bothers me about this book is that it was published in 2006. Many of the issues in this book have not changed since 2006, but it does mean that all of the sources and stories used are at least ten years old. In that time, many viewpoints have changed. As a college student, I also find that it can be hard to relate to stories and situations that are as old as or older than I am. I feel that it is outdated for use as a college textbook when there are so many newer resources coming out.

The discussion questions in this book really force the reader to read, think, and call on outside information or personal experience in order to answer. I found that I had a lot of trouble answering many of the questions because I was asked to think in a way that my brain generally doesn't think, which started to become very frustrating. There is no cut and paste answering for these questions!

it does a great job of displaying the things that were in 2006

I purchased the book for a summer class that I have recently taken. As most of us buy our textbooks and never use them, or just dread having to open them up, this book was surprisingly the opposite of all of that. The articles that make up this book are interesting, insightful and cover a variety of topic from colonialism, globalization, NGO's, and the persecution of peoples are the world. Each article is written by a different author and allows the reader to hear different view points and instances of the topics that each section covers. While the book may not cover all troubles that consume people of more recent times, it does a great job of displaying the things that were in 2006, in which many are still relative today. Throughout reading the book, it just opened my eyes up and mind to things that are happening that are way more serious than what consumes my life. It also taught me more about myself and how I view the world. I found myself enraged at times while reading, and other times feeling guilty or sad. Some of the articles really play of the emotions of the authors and the readers, but each and every article get's their purpose across perfectly. The book provided so much evidence on a array of topics that could even be used by readers in the future. I believe that readers will enjoy the vast variety and points of views that enrich minds about things that affecting the world in a different way than in may affect them.

Kerry Egan is a hospice chaplain and a graduate of Harvard Divinity School. Kerry Egan’s ON LIVING is exactly what the title says, a memoir about how to live. While she is a chaplain and works with people who are typically in hospice care and leaving this world, in this magnificent book, she shares incredibly moving stories from patients who made an impression on her, whose words prompted her to talk about, not how you can die gracefully, but how you can live meaningfully.

This is a book for everyone. Whether you have lost someone important to you or not, this book explains the virtues of not waiting for that last breath you are going to take and telling those you love what you wanted to say when you should have said it, not trying to say you’re sorry to someone whose health is failing when it is too late, and learning the power of forgiveness, which Egan says to do second, “while there is still time to do the actual work that’s involved in seeking and granting forgiveness and arriving at some reconciliation.”

The stories that she shares are vastly different as are the people with whom she spent time with. Egan also opens up about a very difficult time that she went through, which allowed her to see things from another perspective, not just as the chaplain providing comfort but wishing that she had someone to console her, understand what she had gone through.

An important message that Egan is trying to convey is that dying people are just like us, “they just happen to be doing something we’ve never done. To die is a verb, like to jump, to eat, or to laugh. It’s something people do, not who they are.”

ON LIVING is comforting, it is a shining light, it is the grandparent’s words that you heard when you were too young to appreciate them, it is the sage whispers that remind you, this is how I want to live.

An urgency for life

On Living is Kerry Egan’s recounting of stories told to her by hospice patients during her years as a chaplain. I found it readable and engaging in relating the wisdom and healing Ms Egan found from listening to what people with little time left had to say. Their stories are sometimes heart-rending, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny, but never morbid. While it will make the open-minded reader think about confronting death, this book, as the title indicates, is really about confronting life.

Ms Egan is unflinchingly honest in relating the experiences of her patients and of her work trying to help them. She shows us people struggling to cope with incapacity and life’s impending end. She also shows us her brush with psychosis that prompted her hospice work. These dark passages are balanced, however, with commentary informed by her Harvard Divinity School education and the enlightenment she takes from her patients’ tales. Indeed, her knack for squeezing meaning from experience infused her first book, Fumbling (her story of hiking the 500 mile Camino de Santiago in northern Spain), and kept me reading this one.

Though it concerns dying, On Living does not dwell on death. It shows those who are dying as carrying on, as well as they can, to their last day. Many take comfort from religion, but some don’t. Very often, their concerns are mostly for those they will leave behind. Where they are different from people not in a hospice, Ms Egan tells us, is that they know their time is short. So all they do and say takes on an urgency that we should mark.

Ms Egan’s chapters are essays on themes relating to the experiences of one or more patients. She tells the dying person’s story and relates it to her own life. Very often, she makes a quick identification with a patient’s views. For instance, when one impressed upon her that since life is all shades of gray, we shouldn’t get hung up on rules. Following that maxim led to her being reprimanded for bending her job’s rules. While some might judge her unfavorably for such an episode, I see in it an intellectual honesty and empathy that must make her a great chaplain. It certainly makes her a compelling writer.

There are also in this book (as in Fumbling) paranormal highlights. I think they enhance the subject matter. They are described in her incidents with the “medicine woman” and with her “guardian angel.” Such passages are powerful because they come from someone not given to supernatural themes. They don’t detract from her central purpose but rather support it and emphasize life’s wonder. Such wonder is, perhaps, more readily seen when dealing with distress, such as dying.

Ms Egan says:

"There’s nothing stopping you from acting with the same urgency the dying feel."

Feeling that urgency is, I think, this book’s central message. Such feeling creeps upon us as we grow older, if we’re honest with ourselves. We can dread it or let it spur us to a greater appreciation of life. This theme leavens the stories and central narrative of On Living and makes it a worthy resource for inspiration and personal growth.

There is a continuum in Ms Egan’s two books. From Fumbling to On Living, we see the maturation of the young Camino pilgrim into the experienced, enlightened, hospice chaplain. Even so, the young seeker is still there, searching out the truth of life in her daily pilgrimage with a desire to share her insights with the world.

I highly recommend On Living as an inspirational and thoughtful read. Don’t let the hospice stories aspect put you off. The book’s title accurately describes its theme; this is not a funeral dirge. I do suggest, though, that you read Fumbling as well, so as to appreciate Ms Egan’s personal evolution.

The stories in this book remind us that we’re all facing certain death. You can take that as morbid, or let it prompt you to act with an urgency for life.

Great book and a quick read. I was expecting a book about working as a hospice chaplain to be potentially dark. But to the contrary, it was full of love, kindness, and warmth. I can see why Elizabeth Gilbert recommended - it's good for the soul.

A Thrill a Minute

This is my first Gregg Olsen book and I soooo want to read more!

So, Olsen does a little 'ripped from the headlines' storytelling as readers will recognize the real life story of a jail employee who facilitates an escape after starting an intimate relationship with an inmate. Olsen changes things up as both our jail employee and our inmate are female, but serial killer Brenda Nevins is scarier than any male killer out there. She's cold blooded, sadistic, and she can charm anyone - male or female - into doing her bidding.

A secondary story line regards a cold case that centers on a missing girl and a reality show psychic who may be more than she seems.

While I enjoyed both story lines, I enjoyed the Serial Killer story line more and was glad when eventually the plot and subplot meet.

The book is a thrill ride from page one. It's action packed and I tore through it. Definitely your perfect vacation read!

Several things going on and all of them interesting.

Now That She’s Gone grabs you from the very beginning and never lets you go right to the end. The story opens with Janie Thomas sitting in an office. She is troubled and agitated. When another woman enters, they have an exchange and end up hugging. The problem is that the office in a women’s prison, Janie is the warden and the woman hugging her is Brenda Nevins, a serial killer.

From that beginning we are taken on a ride as detective Kendall Stark and forensic pathologist Birdy Waterman search to find Brenda Nevins and Janie Thomas. The character of Brenda Nevins is chillingly developed. She is brutal, smart and charming - a deadly combination for a serial killer.

Brenda Nevins is not all Kendall Stark has to worry about. There is TV psychic, Pandora who is coming to town to work on an unsolved case. Kendall is told to work with her as the current liaison for the case. Kendall is not impressed, but when Pandora makes a dramatic proclamation at the taping, Kendall is forced to look into it.

Several things going on at once in this book and all of them interesting. I couldn’t put it down.

Female Serial Killer on the Loose

Brenda Nevins female serial killer has escaped by seducing the female warden of her prison. Janie Thomas had no idea she was just being used until they were out and she began her time as a tortured plaything for Brenda. Kendall Stark our detective is finding it impossible to deal with a young upstart who wants her to go on TV. Then a reality show comes to town to cover a missing teenager from years before. The star of the show is suppose to have extraordinary powers to discern who did the deed. Needless to say several characters don't make it alive to the end and several other lives are destroyed in the process. Birdie Waterman is a minor character in this novel but an important one. If you have not read any of Glen Olson this is a good story. Not one of the best but a page turner all the same.

Dr. Andranovich received his BA from the University of Virginia's College at Wise and then went to George Mason University for his MA.� After working for Prospect Industries (a commercial roofing and waterproofing company) in northern Virginia, he attended the University of California, Riverside, where he received his PhD in political science.� He worked for the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) and COSMOS Corp. in Washington, DC, and has taught at several universities, most recently Washington State University, before coming to CSULA in 1993.� He has served as his Department's Chairperson, and as the Faculty Director of the Students Learning in Communities program at CSULA. He teaches and advises students in the public administration program. He believes that learning is best accomplished through a variety of approaches and typically uses a combination of lecture, discussion, portfolios, and group assignments in his courses.� He regularly teaches American government, urban politics, and public policy courses.� His research interests are in urban and regional policy making, and comparative public administration.��

He has published on Irish foreign policy and EU foreign security and defence policy. Michael Kennedy is the Executive Editor of the Royal Irish Academy's Documents on Irish Foreign Policy series. He has published widely on twentieth-century Irish diplomatic, political and military history. John Doyle is Executive Dean of DCU's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and asenior lecturer in International Relations. He is the founding co-director of DCU's Centre for International Studies. He is also the editor of Irish Studies in International Affairs. Noel Dorr is the Chairman of the Royal Irish Academy's Committee on International Affairs. He is a former secretary-general of the Department of Foreign Affairs and served as the Irish ambassador to the United Kingdom and the United Nations. He has published widely on Irish foreign policy.
