VERY disappointing.......

Well.....I finished reading this last night....and I was happy to be finished. I was VERY disappointed in this book, as I have read all her others and loved them. This book had some very graphic and extreme sexual violence towards the 3 women characters which I found hard to read. The plot was very unbelievable at times and added an almost "silly" element to this story. The storyline itself was okay, but not griping. Her writing style in this book was hard to follow sometimes, and some of the twists made it unappealing to try to do so. That's just my opinion. I am not recommending this as a good read.

Exhausting!

Jess, Dani, and Courtney, three teenage sisters, live in fear of the moment when their father returns home. Dani, the oldest, takes care of her sisters while trying to build a normal life for herself. Courtney, the middle sister, is the wild child who takes care of no one, not even herself. Jess, the youngest and most book-smart, seems to have the best chance of escaping their small rural Canadian town. The trajectory of their lives changes dramatically on the night when their father comes home to abuse them further and, after a shocking event, they escape in their unreliable truck.

Not surprisingly, the truck breaks down on the way to Vancouver. The small backwater town of Cache Creek appears as though it might provide them with some much needed care, but the girls fall in with the wrong boys and the next five days are the most harrowing of their lives. What they encounter makes dad seem not so bad after all. When they finally escape their torture and are on their way to Vancouver, they are badly damaged both emotionally and physically. This is a turning point in the book, coming about half way through, and allowing each girl to feel hopeful in her own manner. It also feels like a reprieve for the reader, who has thus far been exposed to the nastiest side of humanity.

The second half of the book has the girls finding new lives in Vancouver, helped by an ex-con and his wife. Jess has a baby, and now there are four girls. Most of the second half of the book is told from this new daughter's (Skylar's) perspective. When Skylar is 15 and her aunt, Courtney, reaches a new low, Courtney takes off to avenge the sisters' treatment in Cache Creek and Skylar follows. What happens there returns the girls and the reader to the depravity of the first half of the book. Stevens wraps the plot up in a way that manages to be both gruesome and hopeful at the same time.

This book had a strange sort of approach-avoidance pull over me. I read it quickly, finding it hard to put down even during the most difficult scenes. But on the other hand, I found it hard to pick up knowing that things were just going to continue. It was repetitive, but somehow still intriguing. Stevens describes the small rural towns of British Columbia exceptionally well, although I have no idea if the description is accurate. The reader is transported to the written environment. The evil characters are truly evil and easy to hate; the sympathetic characters are truly good people and easy to like. The girls are complex enough to seem like very real people, although some suspension of disbelief is required as the final quarter of the book plays out.

THOSE GIRLS was emotionally exhausting to read. I think I need a cozy, now.

Another Hit by Stevens

I am such a huge fan of Chevy Stevens work because when you are reading her books you get so pulled in you feel like you are actually a part of the book and Those Girls was no exception. I was actually getting so mad at the characters for their stupidity I just wanted to scream out loud and tell them not to trust strangers and not to do some of the things they were doing that I felt was really stupid I had almost forgotten this was a book and not real life and these people would not hear me yelling. That is how real Stevens writing is.
I loved the plot for this story. It was so real and so believable. It was something that could happen to three sisters even though it was sad and brutal it was so real this book was totally relatable and that is what made it so great. Jamie, Dallas, Crystal and Skylar where all four woman/girls you could run into on the street and not know what demons are hidden in their lives and not know what they have to live with every single day. It is a true testament to a person's strength.
Those Girls gets five out of five stars from me.

The Miracle Mare - wonderful story on page 27

I am biased. But that actually says a lot. I know this horse, very well. Yet reading her story away from our work and my own perception of her...made me realize that she stands on her own! Both literally and metaphorically.
Thank you Chicken Soup for the Soul in seeing Straw's power and her brilliance to choose her for this wonderful book.

Keep on goin, no matter how bad it may look. Go over, go under, go around, go through but...keep going!

More Balm for the Spirit From The Chicken Soup People

Another book of simply beautiful stories--perfect for bedtime reading. There are stories of divine intervention, angel rescues, human interventions as a result of prayer. Even such a simple thing as a feather to help a person in need can create a happy ending. These are all happy endings. Even when a story seems tragic--the death of a young child for instance--there is closure and communication from the other side. There are so-called "everyday miracles" which might just tickle your fancy or give you a smile. Others might make you cry or just bring a tear to the eye. Some will give you goosebumps. All of them will help to strengthen your faith.

I am so happy that the world seems to be losing some of its fascination with ghost stories and starting to enjoy miraculous stories. The one thing that seems to be a common thread in these stories is that the initial fear of the situation the person is confronting is replaced with faith and love. A deceased person suddenly appears at one's bedside--no problem--just an overwhelming sense of love and a feeling of completion. Chicken soup books should be recommended by doctors--they can truly lift your spirits and probably lower your blood pressure!

An easy way to succeed

I purchased this book for my first grader before his test.I reviewed this book with my kindergartener and my first grader.It helped my kindergartener a lot because most of the questions from this book were in the kindergarten test but it did not help my first grader that much. My first grader said he had many questions that he has not done before.The book is great for kindergartener's preparation. My kindergartener was on 96th percentile on the test.
From my experience I think now a days students are tested with questions beyond their grade level.I have a 4th grader who is going to a citywide G&T school(BSI- PS 682)faced the same questions in first grade that my kindergartener experienced this year. So I think for first grader the book should include more challenging questions.

I would recommend this book for a kindergartener.

Was just okay! I saw a number of questions were repeat for the previous grade book as well. Personally I wouldn't buy another book like this- don't think it is made exactly to cater for the kids grade level.

Here, conceptual artist Michael Phelan lives in a former Texaco service station with battery acid stains on the concrete floor and a twenty-foot dining table lining one wall. A chef’s modest house comes with the satisfaction of being handmade down to its side tables and bath, which expands into a private courtyard with an outdoor tub. Another artist uses the many rooms of her house, a former jail, to shift between different mediums—with Judd’s Fort D. A. Russell works always visible from her second-story sun porch.

Extraordinary building costs mean that Marfa dwellers embrace a culture of frontier ingenuity and freedom from excess—salvaged metal signs become sliding doors and lengths of pipe become lighting fixtures, industrial warehouses are redesigned after the area’s white-cube galleries to create space for private or personally created art collections, and other materials are suggested by the land itself: walls are made of adobe bricks or rammed earth to form sculptural courtyards, or, in one remarkable instance, a mix of mud and brick plastered with local soils, cactus mucilage, horse manure, and straw.
