A Big Beautiful Book That Shows and Explains Technique Behind the Asanas

This is a gorgeous, large volume written by Mr. Iyengar. Not only does it explain the history of yoga and its philosophy, it also discusses BKS Iyengar and his life. The bulk of the book focuses on the most popular asanas. The photography of the asanas (poses) are superb. Each pose is photographed from different angles so you can see what the pose is supposed to look like when done correctly. Iyengar yoga stresses proper alignment and breathing. There are tips and techniques for beginners and advanced yogis. I take yoga classes that have 40 people; the teacher does not have the time to go around correcting everybody. Reading this book has helped me enormously with my yoga. This volume is packed with information, so you can always discover something new when re-reading it. It is a fantastic reference for beginners to advanced students. I highly recommend this as an invaluable resource if you practice Iyengar Yoga.

This book is amazing - it shows you how to get into the pose, what the pose is beneficial for, gives you a 360 degree view of each pose and he then provides various modifications for each pose to take you through the months as you build your practice. The last part of the book give you a series of poses that are beneficial for various ailments or issues. This is an amazing book and I wish I had it sooner!

Practice Changing!

This book is changing my practice. First it is beautiful and coffee table quality. Secondly, the clear photos and descriptions, along with the organization of the book, have made it very a useful adjunct to my yoga classes. I am practicing more regularly and with clearer intention. Also pronouncing the Sanskrit names before each pose, which was hard before because although I had heard them in class, I hadn't seen them in writing associated with the pose before. Not that this is terribly important, but it makes me feel like a sincere student now. There are helpful sections organized around various ailments to help choose appropriate therapeutic poses.
