Exceptional...

I'm embarrassed to admit that I had this book on my bookshelf for over three years before finally picking it up. Better late than never, right?! Now that I've finally read it, I must say how truly wonderful and exciting it is. The characters are so eccentric and bizarre, I had to keep reminding myself that these are REAL people. And John Berendt did an excellent job recreating this true-crime story into something so readable, humorous and delicious. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is fabulous...I couldn't get enough of it!
The main character in this novel is first and foremost, Savannah, Georgia. Such a glorious and mysterious backdrop for such an intriguing storyline -- and John Berendt fleshed it out so magnificantly, that Savannah breathes and lives as easily as those who live there. Mostly this book is about a rich antique dealer, Jim Williams, who was accused of murder. However, it is not an ordinary murder case -- all sorts of twists come out of the woodwork for this one, making this novel not only a true-crime story, but a mystery as well. Surrounding the murder aspect are the citizens of Savannah that the author comes in contact with: Luther Driggers, a former pesticide employee, who has a vial of poison potent enough to kill every one in the county; Chablis, the potty-mouthed drag queen and performer; Joe Odom, a modern vagrant who uses his home(s) as a tourist stop; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who uses roots, herbs, and graveyard dirt to weave her magic spells.
Excellent writing and amazing storytelling make Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and must-have book. One of the better novels I have read this year. I watched the movie afterwards, but the book, by far, tells the story better. I recommend this one to everyone -- southern fiction fans will delight in its eccentricities, true-crime lovers will enjoy the murder case, and armchair travelers will be booking trips to Savannah soon after the close of this book! Good job, John Berendt!

Intriguing Portrait of Savannah

Non-fiction stories of a unique southern city are nicely interwoven by Esquire writer Berendt, who was lucky enough to live there.
Basically, it is a true crime novel, but it is written with warmth, humor, and a remarkable eye for detail. Berendt takes the reader behind velvet curtains and antique walls into a society where pedigree is based as much on lineage, wealth, and power as on quirky southern traditions like knowing how to serve a fine platter of tomato sandwiches.
Forget Eastwood's oddly disappointing film; this book is quite marvelous. True crime lover? You will enjoy the book's steamy setting and colorful characters, an almost poetic break from the repetitive and merely competant writings by the likes of Ann Rule. Aristocracy - watcher? You will savour the odd little schemes and intrigues exposed without any hint of malice. The tragic saga of one man's extraordinary ascent into high society is presented amidst many delicious (and often hilarious) vignettes of all levels of Savannah's class structure. The author beautifully describes Savannah's magic, mystery, and achingly sad decay. Really, it is a fine tribute to this historic city of likeable conmen, sexy ne'er-do-wells, conniving politicians, and obsessive hostesses.
It's a real page-turner, a good companion if you are planning to visit Savannah.

(Resubmitted) - Find out what the fuss was about

This is one of those books, like Mitch Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie, that for some reason captures the attention of the book-buying public, as the hardcover version was on the bestseller lists for years. Most readers have given you their opinions here at Amazon, 325 at last count, and so I figured I would put in my two cents as well. (Please note this review is resubmitted to correct technical errors in the previous version).
Berendt seems to be the perfect example of a writer being in the right place at the right time - he appears in Savannah as a featues writer to cover a lavish holiday party hosted by the extravagant antiques dealer Jim Williams, at the famed Mercer House, and is swept up in a murder and ensuing trial. There is no great mystery associated with the murder itself, everyone knows ... pulled the trigger, and yet Berendt manages to write a colorful, suspenseful page-turner that captivated the imagination of the public like few other non-fiction novels ever have. In Cold Blood by Capote comes to mind, but trust me this story is infinitely more entertaining.
Ultimately, the book works on many levels. It is an effective chronicle of a series of high-profile trials, an extended travelogue in which the colorful city of Savannah stands out as perhaps the star of the book, and a profile of Savannah's arostocracy, in which the reader understands Williams' sense of wanting to belong despite considerable obstacles. (Williams was not "old money", and therefore not really accepted in the city's highest circles, and as the trial revealed he was gay). Most of all, the book is a smorgasbord of colorful characters (none more compelling than the Lady Chablis) and bizarre situations that create a timeless sense of Savannah as a mysterious, alluring city. You encounter men walking imaginary dogs, a voodoo priestess performing odd rituals in a graveyard, and a lawyer who takes off with the UGA mascot for the annual Florida v. Georgia college football game, in the midst of the biggest murder trial of his career.
The language of the book is effortless, almost as if it wrote itself, which makes sense when you consider the author came from a magazine background and started out writing a "fluff" features piece. Berendt thankfully avoids the excessive crime scene minutae and endless details of minor courtroom tactics that sometimes bogs down other true crime books, and keeps the reader focused on the sense of place, and the colorful characters, that are the true focus of his story. I enjoyed it thoroughly, read it very quickly and was sorry to put it down. A definite thumbs up.

Excellent Resource Book for Beauty Jouralists

As a beauty writer, I consider this book my new bible. Each cosmeceutical ingredient has its own entry and each entry is packed with useful information and references. Entry sections include: source, history, chemistry, oral uses, topical uses, safety issues, environmental impact, formulation considerations, usage considerations, background and more. The writing is clear and comprehensive and the book is very well organized, making it easy for me to find the info I need--and fast.

A Must Have for Anyone Seriouly Interested in Skin Care

This book about cosmetic ingredients should benefit anyone with a serious interest in skin care, including dermatologists, cosmetic chemists, aestheticians and keen lay people. The author discusses the research on many ingredients, including some of the most commonly recognized, such as the retinoids, vitamins C and E, aloe, resveratrol (a red wine component), petrolatum, silicones and honey. The text, although unique, is easily understood, and by separating fact from fiction allows insight into cosmeceutical claims. The author's straightforward and unbiased approach toward skin care makes this an excellent reference text. The well-placed overviews, such as those on pigmentation, aging and acne, combined with chapters on, for example, skin structure and cosmetic labeling, lift this text beyond its encyclopedic nature.

The information in the book is rather undetailed. It does, however, cover most of the standard ingredients and gives much interesting stuff to read. In my point of view books in this price category should be a bit thicker than 400 pages; other scientific books I use for my studies are three to five times as thick. Nevertheless I like the book and it does indeed give useful information about cosmetics in general.

Monsters, according to popular opinion, live under beds. Koller (the Mole and Shrew books), rather than deny these beasts' existence, questions their frightful intentions. In this mildly suspenseful tale, a boy named Howard tells his mother, "I heard [a monster] snurkling under my bed." Meanwhile, a young monster informs his mother that he hears a boy "sneezing on top of my bed." Left alone by their disbelieving parents, human and monster peek at each other and shriek in fear; only when their terror turns to tears do they dare a second, curious look. On the closing page, they trade places for a practical joke that's left to the reader's imagination: " 'Oh, Mommy,' they both called together. 'Mommy, come quick!' " Lewin (Somebody Catch My Homework) draws in loose, Quentin Blake-style gestures of pen and ink, and fills the negative space with watercolor washes of dusky blue and brown. She envisions Monster (who reads a scary comic titled Boy) as a warty green gargoyle with clawed toes, a boar's snout and tusks. Koller invents a monster vocabulary: Monster "whimples" when Howard whimpers, and "sniggles" when his friend giggles. The plot is predictable and even a bit shopworn, yet the energetic telling and agreeable illustrations could put some fears temporarily to rest. Ages 4-8.

PreSchool-Grade 2. When Howard tells his mother about the monster under his bed, she says there's no such thing. Young Monster's mother says the same thing when he describes the boy on top of the bed. When the two at last meet, however, with an eye-popping mutual "Aagh!" it's clear that they have much in common, including parents long since fed up with their offspring's imaginations. The bonds of friendship forge, and the final page shows the two hatching a plan to scare their disbelieving moms. Like Mercer Mayer's There's a Nightmare in My Closet (Dial, 1968), this is a satisfying version of the familiar tale of child/monster coexistence. It runs a gamut of emotions from apprehension to frustration (both child and parent), terror, empathy, to, finally, the friendly sharing of a good joke. Lewin's ink-and-wash cartoon scrawls lend just the right exaggerated and humorous touch to put Koller's all-too-likely scenario over the top. Ages 5^-8. Koller takes a familiar story and adds a humorous twist: from under the bed, a monster mother tells her frightened son, "There are no such things as boys." The story cuts back and forth, alternating typical night fright scenes between the boy and his mother with the monster version of the same scene taking place under the bed. In a clever final scene, boy and monster, having discovered each other, team up to trick the moms by switching places and giving one last call for help. Koller's timing is right on, and Lewin's illustrations, expressive watercolors accented with thick, loose black line, have the same fast, humorous pace as the story. Librarians who think they don't need another monster-under-the-bed story might want to reconsider. Lauren Peterson

A Favorite for Parents and Kids

We heard this book at Storytime at our local library and fell in love with it. The kids loved the boy and the monster teaching their Moms that there is "such a thing", and all the mothers in the room were laughing at the familiar nightime ritual of little boys-- with a surprise ending. It is my favorite children's book and I think every kid should have it. Let them go to bed laughing about monsters under the bed, instead of being afraid of them.

A laugh-out-loud bedtime story!

This is so funny, it had four adult women laughing out loud! A little boy on top of the bed and a little monster under the bed are both told by their mothers not to be afraid--there's no such thing as monsters/boys! But the boy hears a snurkle and the monster hears a sneeze, and they KNOW! Delightfully written, with a surprise ending that's perfect. Wonderful pictures, too.

A little laughter goes a long way to scare off the monsters in the dark!

This has been a favorite book in our family for years. Even now, when my teenage boys saw me getting ready to wrap this on up, they panicked! "You're not giving that away, are you Mom?" I had to reassure them that this was a new copy, not the one we had all shared. In fact, I'd purchased three so that I can eventually provide each of them with one of their own.

So why is this such a favorite? It turns the whole idea of the monster under the bed on its head! It eases those worries with great humor and a bit of fun at Moms' expense. And it teaches that you can't judge a person by what you've heard about them - you've got to find out for yourself - something that I liked a whole lot, but I don't think my sons ever noticed it (which is even better).

THE ARTIST'S BODY is one of the finer compilations of an art form that drew attention from the press, museum curators, the public, the critics and fellow artists, probably more intensely focused than any other 'art movement' of the 20th Century. In this well documented and copiously illustrated volume the multiple authors contribute historical data, psychological responses and etiologies,and the works are all edited with skill and sensitivity by Tracey Warr and Amelia Jones. First published in 2000 in an expensive hardbound edition, the current release is now in affordable paperback form and belongs in the libraries of all who are interested in the trends and spectrum of contemporary art.

The title of the book explains the content well. This is a collection of the works of artists who have turned their art inward and use their own bodies as the matrix for expression. Here are the 'crucifixion' of Chris Burden on a Volkswagen, the cutting and piercing of skin by artists who use their own body fluids as paint, performance art in which the artist publicly reveals body functions with attributes assigned to various organs that were never imagined before, the famous 'Piss Christ' of Andres Serrano, the transgender photographs of Lyle Ashton Harris and the explicit sexuality of Robert Mapplethorpe - in each of these the artist speaks to the audience about life expressions as acted out by or realized by the artist using the format of his/her body. And in many ways these at times disturbing images created are simply another form of self-portraiture.

Amelia Jones' writing is cogent and non-judgmental and her survey begins with none other than Marcel Duchamp and examines most all of the artists who have participated in this movement up to the year 2000. Tracey Warr has gathered not only copious photographs and excerpts from videotapes to illustrate Jones' survey, but she has also added statements by the artists, responses from the critics, examinations by historians, and even details of public response to this medium.

While many may view this book as shock material, closer examination and actual reading of the superb writing (with significant contributions by such luminaries as Lucy Lippard, Thomas McEvilley, George Bataille and Gilles Deleuze) will acquaint the novice of the true significance of this art form. Whether the human body is used as a surface, as a 'paint brush', as ritualistic mutilation reaching for meaning in a world that seems dulled to invention, in performance, or in using the body as an imprinter of image on various substrates, the need for this type of expression is as valid as any other form of the artists' invention. This is a challenging book, in some ways a disturbing book, but it is the finest volume to address this art movement as has been written. Super Helpful 10/10 would recommend

This book is utterly fascinating to page through. As an artist I find it extremely helpful since I am trying to work more with Performance based media. The book explains all types of way artists use their bodies then goes on to give examples of such work with captions, artists names, and a paragraph or two about the piece. There are at least 100 pieces in the book and all are documented thoroughly. Some works are better than others but that is to be expected in art! Some are quite graphic but hey it's art. I bought this as a gift and might buy one for myself!

This book is splendid for those interested in art- especially body and performance art. There are short blurbs about so many fascinating artists that are great for motivating further study. The bits of theory and pictures are great. This would make a fantastic coffee table book too (as long as your guests aren't easily offended- some of the pictures are graphic). I highly recommend this book.

About the Author

Dr. Jioanna Carjuzaa holds a Ph.D. in Multicultural, Social and Bilingual Foundations of Education from the University of Colorado-Boulder. At Montana State University she serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Bilingual and Multicultural Education. She teaches courses in Education and Native American Studies. Jioanna is grateful to serve as the facilitator for Indian Education for all professional development opportunities for the MSU community, as the co-advisor to American Indian Council, and as the faculty advisor for the Wanji Oyate Education Cohort for Native students pursuing teaching careers. She was the recipient of the 2013 G. Pritchy Smith Multicultural Educator of the Year Award.

 

Richard D. Kellough spent 11 years as a high school teacher, including three years as teacher-principal, 34 years as professor of secondary education at California State University, Sacramento, and he has authored or co-authored more than 60 books for educators.
