Review
"One of the most important books of [Pierce's] career thus far, and a heavy contender for any best books list of 2015." - BOOKSLUT

"It's been a long timesince I've encountered an author whose workinstills that feeling of discovery and fascinationthat could keepme reading long into the quiet hours, and then bring me right back again for another go because there's still more to uncover. Cameron Pierce is such an author [...]If you like books that stretch the bounds of convention and celebrate the beauty of life and language, THE INCOMING TIDE is a book you want to read, and then read again." - SHOTGUN LOGIC

"Cameron Pierce's nimble writing will pry complex and long-buried emotions out of you out of sheer simplicity and immediacy. I am now convinced that Pierce is a literary mystic." - DEAD END FOLLIES

"Could the pocket-sized volume of poetry be the most important political statement in the debate for art's universal appeal? Frank O'Hara'sLunch Poems--and the rest of "The Pocket Poets Series," really--certainly vied for the necessity of a teensy book of verse to accompany lunch. Cameron Pierce's newest book,The Incoming Tide, is a slim volume of poetry and lyrical essays about Pierce's fishing adventures, his life in Astoria, and his transition into domestic life and fatherhood, and it's an excellent lunchtime companion, too." - ENCLAVE

"Perhaps maybe his most personal book yet, the novel is based around fishing. Lots of these stories stand on their own like little microcosm pools, around the big theme of family and love that unites and divides them." - CULTURED VULTURES

Beer, Fish, Life
By Scott Adlerberg
A follow-up and companion piece to his earlier OUR LOVE WILL GO THE WAY OF THE SALMON, Cameron Pierce's THE INCOMING TIDE is a beautifully coherent miscellany about the creative impulse, the anxieties and expectations of approaching fatherhood, and the simple pleasure of enjoying a beer. Did I forget something? Of course: it's also about fishing. I don't fish, but for the second book in a row, Pierce had me totally absorbed in his stories and anecdotes about this particular activity and the passion that people bring to it. His descriptions of different types of fish and bait are striking, and he also happens to be a superb nature writer, attuned to beauty and conveying that beauty in graceful, crystalline language whether he's working in poetry or prose. This is a lovely and, yes, charming book, and where else are you going to get a series of imagined beer commercials described that you'd really love to see? THE INCOMING TIDE is a quick and worthwhile read.

Deeply moving, funny, and fantastic
By Steve Lowe
Part essay, part lyrical song to the sea, part inner monologue about beer commercial ideas that will in equal parts make you laugh, smile knowingly, smile simply from the surprise and delight of such uniquely turned phrases, and shiver at the thought of icy water and sea breezes. Pierce's writing at this point of his career comes with his own particular scent -- it smells of brined fish, and the tide, and soft babies. He may be my favorite writer. There are a few others on that list, but he's definitely near the top.

Funny, creative, touching, and fishy
By Eddy Rathke
Really loved this little book. It works as both a poetry and story collection, but also as a short novel about impending fatherhood, creativity, and, of course, fishing.

It's funny, delightful, and sometimes quite touching. It's a very quick read as well.

So far I've only read very old novels by Pierce and then this, his newest book, but it feels like a dramatic difference. I have several more of his books and plan on delving into who he was as a writer and who he is now.

Definitely a great book.

Black Elk Speaks, by John G. Neihardt

Black Elk Speaks, the story of the Oglala Lakota visionary and healer Nicholas Black Elk (1863–1950) and his people during momentous twilight years of the nineteenth century, offers readers much more than a precious glimpse of a vanished time. Black Elk’s searing visions of the unity of humanity and Earth, conveyed by John G. Neihardt, have made this book a classic that crosses multiple genres. Whether appreciated as the poignant tale of a Lakota life, as a history of a Native nation, or as an enduring spiritual testament, Black Elk Speaks is unforgettable.

Black Elk met the distinguished poet, writer, and critic John G. Neihardt in 1930 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and asked Neihardt to share his story with the world. Neihardt understood and conveyed Black Elk’s experiences in this powerful and inspirational message for all humankind.

This complete edition features a new introduction byhistorian Philip J. Deloria and annotations of Black Elk’s story by renowned Lakota scholar Raymond J. DeMallie. Three essays by John G. Neihardt provide background on this landmark work along with pieces by Vine Deloria Jr., Raymond J. DeMallie, Alexis Petri, and Lori Utecht. Maps, original illustrations by Standing Bear, and a set of appendixes rounds out the edition.

Must Read classic
By Crystal
I didn't read this edition; a little paperback version came to me. I read it long ago and read it again recently. This book had an incredible impact on me. Over the years people have come to criticize the author, John Neidhardt. The book ends somewhat abruptly not long after Wounded Knee and then there is an account of Black Elk's prayer on Harney Peak when he was an old man and he asked to make his people live again kind of tacked on the end. Many seem to feel Neidhardt was exploiting Black Elk to get a book out of him. I don't claim to be an expert on Black Elk and this subject, but from what I know I do not agree with the totally cynical assessment. Black Elk had been off the reservation in the Buffalo Bill Show and given his experiences he was hardly naive or ignorant. Black Elk's son Ben had been in the Carlyle school so he would have known if the book did not reflect his father's vision and words and life. The book was also not an instant bestseller. Neidhardt promoted this book and Black Elk's vision tirelessly until the end of his life and I truly believe it was because he saw the incredible spiritual nature of Black Elk, his life, and visions. And his "great vision" as a youngster can only be described as cataclysmic and psychedelic. When the spirits want you to see something you will see it and no drugs are necessary.

Neidhardt left out the ensuing years on Pine Ridge Reservation and Black Elk's acceptance of Catholicism to frame a lost way of life, the sadness and injustice of it, and the greatness and seeming inevitability of Black Elk's vision. I believe any poetic license taken was in service of bringing forth a greater truth. The book was not meant to be a biography or history of the Lakota, but to preserve Black Elk's vision and so the purpose of the book was accomplished. Those who want to pick at the book miss the greater impact of Black Elk's life and vision. As this was not Neidhardt's culture he probably also didn't totally understand nor was he able to explain some things, but again, are we missing the greater truth of the book by focusing on imperfections? Read this book with an open heart and you won't be disappointed.

Some feel Black Elk became a Catholic as a way of continuing to teach the Lakota way along with the Christian faith to preserve the Lakota culture. I believe he was intelligent and had such a great spirit he saw he could blend both faiths and build a bridge for the future. Nor was he intimidated into the Christian faith. His daughter said his acceptance of the Catholic faith was true and not a sham to keep teaching the Lakota ways surreptitiously. After reading this book, if Black Elk interests you there are books available on the later half of his life. Black Elk lived until 1950. You may also be interested in The Sacred Pipe: Black Elk's Account of the Seven Rites of the Oglala Sioux (The Civilization of the American Indian Series).

If you would like a somewhat different perspective or style of writing you might take a look at Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions (Enriched Classics). Lame Deer felt Black Elk Speaks missed the mark in some ways so he enlisted the help of Richard Erdoes to write his own book as Lame Deer did not speak much English. I enjoyed reading Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions as there is humor and compassion toward all in his account of his life and that of his people.

If you read nothing else in Native American history, be sure to read this book!
By Larryz
This is by far the best book I have read so far, from all of the Native American books on Amazon. It is also the best of quality of the books I have received, even though it's soft bound. You will take a historical adventure with Black Elk at your side to the Little Big Horn and to Wounded Knee. This book was written from the transcripts of the original author who lived with Black Elk while writing it. The book was translated by Black Elk's son who was fluent in English and in the Sioux language. There are footnotes throughout by a reviewing author that tells of when the author strays from the original transcripts. I think they could have been left out or put at the end of the book. I would read the entire chapter, then go back and read the footnotes, as there are so many that they kind of get in the way. At times though, I must admit they help out. This is a real life Native American history as told by one who lived it. His vision, is probably one of the most important lessons in all of Native American history and belief systems. I truly think this is one of the best books that I have read so far, and intend to read it again. It makes me sorry to read of our military efforts to exterminate our Native Americans and our government treaties that were broken. We are truly blessed by our Native American spirituality, history and wisdom. I can only pray that we work together on this earth and honor our words in the future.

Black Elk himself comes across as a wonderful spiritual individual
By Insight1001
One of the most profound books of native American teachings. Black Elk rode with Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. In addition to being a Lakota warrior, he was also a visionary and shaman. It is this latter quality that makes his teachings so powerful. His visions have much to say about the events that took place around the time of Wounded Knee and afterwards. All of that was foretold by Black Elk and led to his sense of sadness about the future. Black Elk himself comes across as a wonderful spiritual individual. The world is blessed by having his teachings available. If you have had any thought about reading "Black Elk Speaks" but have not yet done so, now is the time.

Mediated Identities: Youth, Agency, and Globalization (Mediated Youth), by Divya McMillin

Mediated Identities is an empirical examination of how youth identity is negotiated in urban and rural spaces where cultural, economic, and political forces compete for the allegiance of the young consumer and worker. Rich with fieldwork on teens and television in India, Germany, South Africa, and the United States, the book provides a new direction for the critical discussion of youth agency. It questions young people as autonomous consumers and examines the interpellatory forces of media and market. The application of postcolonial theory produces an incisive analysis of television and other media consumption as part of a process that bolsters the neocolonial imperatives of globalization. Simultaneously, the book focuses on the opportunism on both sides of the equation, on youth particularly in developing economies and the industries that need their cheap labor. In such opportunistic contexts, Mediated Identities addresses ethical dilemmas and transformative possibilities.

Review
"Divya C. McMillin asks vital and compelling questions about the construction of youth identities in an era of postcolonialism, neoliberalism, and transnational media. Her fieldwork in international locales offers insights into the cultivation of a 'global proletariat' in the context of the complex, vibrant, and hybridized youth cultures that crosscut the globe. Along the way, she provides nuanced theoretical insights that bring together cultural studies, theories of gender and identity, and production analysis in new and illuminating ways. Lucidly written and energetically researched, 'Mediated Identities' makes an invaluable contribution to the literature on youth and media by taking into account the realities of the twenty-first century." -- Meenakshi Gigi Durham, Ph.D.

-In this theoretically sophisticated and ethnographically rich book, Divya C. McMillin succeeds in taking the study of youth and media in exciting new directions. Viewing culture as dynamic, and identity as constantly constructed and negotiated, McMillin goes beyond the Euro-American scholarship that has set the agenda for studies of mediated youth culture. Within a framework of postcolonial theory, she rethinks that agenda for the global mediascape, drawing on research with youth across several continents. This book will be welcomed by communication scholars, anthropologists, and all those interested in the processes of media globalization and their role in the cross-cultural experiences of youth.- (S. Elizabeth Bird, Professor, University of South Florida)
-In this important book, Divya C. McMillin builds on her earlier work in international media studies to explore the complex lifeworld settings in which young people across four continents put media resources to use. Transcending old debates on agency, resistance, and identity, McMillin provides a rich account of young people's work, family, and social contexts under the pressures of neoliberalism and globalization. With much theoretical sophistication, this book sets out a new agenda for youth studies and comparative media studies, and should be widely welcomed.- (Nick Couldry, Professor, Goldsmiths, University of London)
-Divya C. McMillin takes us on a fascinating, eye-opening journey into the dynamic working of structure and culture through her meetings with youth in their bedrooms, school yards, and cybercafes - as she theorizes about culture and identity in a global world. Empirically grounded, written with an eye sensitive to detail and context, and richly theoretical, this book enables the reader to gain a closer view of the everyday life of urban and rural youth as they negotiate and construct their identities in multicultural environments. While Euro-American readers gain access to a whole new way of seeing and understanding youth, those from non-western traditions will find their many voices represented in a colorful, vivid, and strongly engaging style.- (Dafna Lemish, Professor, Tel Aviv University, Editor of the 'Journal of Children and Media')"

When Clothes Become Fashion: Design and Innovation Systems, by Ingrid Loschek

When, how and why do clothes become fashion? Fashion is more than mere clothing. It is a moment of invention, a distillation of desire, a reflection of a zeitgeist. It is also a business relying on an intricate network of manufacture, marketing and retail. Fashion is both medium and message but it does not explain itself. It requires language and images for its global mediation. It develops from the prescience of the designer and is dependent on acceptance by observers and wearers alike. When Clothes Become Fashion explores the structures and strategies which underlie fashion innovation, how fashion is perceived and the point at which clothing is accepted or rejected as fashion. The book provides a clear theoretical framework for understanding the world of fashion - its aesthetic premises, plurality of styles, performative impulses, social qualities and economic conditions.

Review
"When Clothes Become Fashion systematically analyzes the phenomenon of fashion and reveals part of the secret on which fashion depends. Ideal for students, the book also offers fascinating insights for the general reader." Barbara Vinken, University of Munich This is a book that I probably will read more than once because it is so dense with analysis. Although the book is dense with fashion theory and rigourous analysis, it is accessible to a general reader. But for artists whose work references clothing, the body, or fashion, this book is well worth the investment in time because it offers a thoughtful analysis of contemporary fashion designers and artists whose work exists on the boundary between fashion and art. He was mostly wrong...

but his views dominated international thinking about navies for a half century. But I write this with 120 years more years of history than he had. Written with mind-numbing details about historical naval battles, Mahan's world was totally two dimensional (i.e. no air power), and without electronic intelligence gathering. Those two developments made his views outdated. And his failure to consider economic power and the basis of military power also casts doubt on his theories. His views were somewhat right for the Russo-Japanese war and the Spanish American war. They were clearly obsolete by December 7, 1941. And yet this book was required reading in virtually every navy in the world for 50+ years.

but the physics are easy to understand from a tactical point of view
By Lawrence M. Turri
Fascinating book. Difficult to keep up with sailing jargon, but the physics are easy to understand from a tactical point of view. It all crosses over to contemporary times. Tactics and the individual. Confidence or no. Enjoyed the reading.

By Mike M.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this classic that set the stage for Naval Strategy up to and including World War II. I learned a great deal about the evolution of naval warfare over a 2000 year period. The coverage of naval combat in the day of sail was very interesting. Also of interest was Capt Mahan's view of England's mistake in not peacefully recognizing American independence, thus creating an enemy and denying itself access to friendly Naval facilities in its ongoing struggles with France. Much of the book was dedicated to the praise of the Royal Navy, its strategy, tactics, and professionalism; especially when compared to the French and Spanish Naval tactics. This book set the stage for the modern US Navy.

From Publishers Weekly
Whether business leaders want a steady drizzle or an out-and-out monsoon, they can use Sobel's formula for landing and keeping customers-what he calls "making rain." Based on building relationships, it starts with the key components of knowledge, service and demonstrable value; these are the building blocks that attract clients, says business adviser Sobel (Clients for Life). In this straightforward manual, he gives practical strategies to help leaders of service firms and large corporations alike become indispensable advisers to their clients, thus cementing a long-term connection. The principles behind his tactics are simple: get to know your client, gain respect for your knowledge and win personal respect. Then, drive it home by delivering above and beyond, again and again. These ideas are old as dirt. Sobel reaches across centuries to dig up examples of their success, from Aristotle to Ben Franklin. He buffs up these ageless notions and places them within engaging anecdotes. Although the lessons aren't strokes of genius, they should help professionals through most dry spells.

From Booklist
Sobel, a consultant, offers his approach to developing optimum client relationships with advice on how to break into a client's inner circle by becoming a trusted advisor. We learn that a rainmaker is one who snags big clients and closes big deals with skills to build deep client relationships for the long term by consistently adding value. Using stories, diagrams, and valuable insight, the author provides suggestions for becoming a trusted advisor, an intellectual partner, and hence a rainmaker. The author gives readers his views on how to move from the first relationship phase as an expert for hire to the role of steady supplier who is rewarded with repeat business. The next level, trusted advisor, is achieved through attributes, attitudes, and strategies that add value year after year and culminate in lifelong loyalty and insider status. Sobel concludes with an assessment tool to determine individual or organizational strengths and weaknesses by analyzing their relationships and the role they play with each client. Mary Whaley

The grand visions of the new economy encouraged many consultants to adopt an impatient and dictatorial manner. With little regard for their clients' cultures or competencies, they often urged companies to adopt ambitious strategies and transform their organizations. But in this follow-up to Sobel's coauthored Clients for Life, we get a refreshing reminder that sheer brainpower and eloquence are less important than we might thing. Sobel tells his fellow consultants that to win repeat business, they should focus on building relationships with clients and leveraging the resources at hand. He regards relationship building not as a necessary chore but as the foundation for advancing all truly useful advice-only by gaining clients' complete trust, he insists, can consultants hope to have any influence. And he says that rather than driving new ideas, consultants should aim at adding sophistication and depth to clients' existing ideas and capabilities. To keep from dominating the conversation, he points out, consultants need to be secure with themselves about their necessarily limited role. While slavish adherence to this modest prescription could lead to organizational stagnation - and leave consultants vulnerable when companies change leaders - it's a sensible starting point in today's chastened economy. Practical and refreshing
By A Customer
There are very few worthwhile books about building client relationships, and this is definitely one of them. Sobel's main focus is how you de-commoditize yourself in increasingly competitive service markets. What I like is that he doesn't pretend to offer a grand strategy or one-size-fits-all prescription, but rather a series of thoughtful ideas for distinguishing yourself from the pack. These include thinking holistically about your "relationship capital"; the seven attributes of client advisors; the mindset of "independent wealth"; and some interesting history about great client advisors. The case studies/anecdotes are educational and often funny, and the writing is excellent. The chapters are short and easy to read.

Great Advice for Advisors
By A Customer
I highly recommend Making Rain to anyone who works with clients. It's a terrific book that's also entertaining and enjoyable to read. I loved Sobel's first effort, Clients for Life, and was pleasantly surprised when I read Making Rain. Many second books on a similar topic end up being rehashes, but Sobel has created a number of intriguing new ideas and taken some of his original material to a new level. Sobel's basic premise is that experts for hire who simply do a good job delivering on the letter of their contracts (what he calls "core value") will never command much loyalty from their clients and customers, who can pick and choose from many suppliers. To build loyalty, you first have to add not just core value but also surprise value and personal value. Second, you have to go beyond "professional credibility" and build personal trust. And finally, you have to go the extra mile-demonstrate that you truly care and are willing to do whatever it takes. Easy to say, not so easy to do. What I like about Making Rain is that it has 28 short, readable chapters, each of which contains strategies and suggestions for actually delivering on these things. The chapters are grouped around the different phases of any client relationship (i.e., first you're an expert for hire; then you win repeat business and become a steady supplier; and finally, if you're especially skilled, you may become an advisor who is really part of the inner circle). There's a chapter on "breaking through" with clients at the start of the relationship; on building trust in a first meeting; on developing relationship capital (an very useful framework about five types of relationships you need in your career); and others on sustaining relationships over time, multiplying relationships, developing "the mindset of independent wealth," etc. The book also contains some nice cartoons about advising. In this difficult economy (or in a good one, for that matter) Sobel's advice is right on target.

Very Useful Wisdom
By Bill Clarkson
This is a subtle book which contains a lot of wisdom about building client and customer relationships. It's a well written and engaging read. The premise is that traditional "sometimes wrong but never in doubt" rainmakers are increasingly dysfunctional in service organizations, whose clients demand value-added in the very first meeting. They are too sales-focused, they are in-and-out, and they don't bring enough content or client knowledge to early client meetings. The alternative is to teach every professional to make a bit of rain every day or every week. Each chapter looks at a different skill or strategy which will help readers "make rain" with their
clients. Chapter three is useful because it summarizes the advisor skills which are set out in Sobel's superb first book, Clients For Life. Other chapters cover topics such as rapidly building trust; adding core, surprise, and personal value to relationships; exercising the mindset of independent
wealth; and developing institutional mechanisms to "make rain" at the firm level. I think Making Rain appeals to a sophisticated reader, with its engaging anecdotes about client relationships and several chapters about historical figures who were great makers of rain (for example, Benjamin Franklin and the Welsh mystic, Merlin). This is an excellent read.
