The title of You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G centers on the advice Ben Carson’s mother gave him and his brother: you have a brain–use it. The well-known neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson has overcome the obstacles of his father’s leaving the family, being considered stupid by his classmates in grade school, and having a violent temper. He articulates eight principles that helped shape his future and which make up thinking big: Talent, Honesty, Insight, being Nice, Knowledge, Books, In-Depth Learning, and God. Writing for a teen audience, Carson amply demonstrates that the effective use of one’s brain does trump peer pressure. In his experience, “peers” were actually People Encouraging Errors, Rudeness and stupidity. Carson also makes clear that his own battle with an out-of-control temper required help from God, though using his brain to recognize the need was essential. Gregg Lewis is the author or coauthor of more than 50 books, and Deborah Shaw Lewis has authored or coauthored more than a dozen books; the two are the parents of five children. About the Author

Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., became the chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1984 at the age of 33, making him the youngest major division director in the hospital's history. He has written and published nine books, four of which were co-authored with Candy,  his wife of 40 years. Dr. Carson was the recipient of the 2006 Spingarn Medal. In June 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. U.S. News Media Group and Harvard's Center for Public Leadership recognized Dr. Carson as one of "America's Best Leaders" in 2008. In 2014, the Gallup Organization, in their annual survey, named Dr. Carson as one of the 10 Most Admired Men in the World.

Dr. Carson and his wife are co-founders of the Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments. In addition, Dr. Carson is now the Honorary National Chairman of the My Faith Votes campaign and continues to work tirelessly for the cause of the American people.

Gregg Lewis is an award-winning author and coauthor of more than fifty books, including Gifted Hands, The Ben Carson Story, Take the Risk and The Big Picture.

Deborah Shaw Lewis has authored or coauthored more than a dozen books, including Gifted Hands, The Ben Carson Story, has taught school, does professional storytelling, speaks on motherhood and family issues, and holds a master's degree in early childhood development. She and Gregg are the parents of five children.

A good book for teenagers and their parents to read and discuss

You Have a Brain by Dr. Ben Carson.
This is the second book I have read by Dr. Carson and I have found both inspirational and informative. I was glad to see a chapter devoted to his mother, Sonya Carson. This mother is one who cared for her children and was the biggest influence in their lives as far as I was concerned.
Dr. Carson was a world-known neurosurgeon who worked hard to get to his position. He proves it can be done and it is up to you to do what is necessary to make your goal in life.

Chapter 4: How We Got Smart
Chapter 5: Bookworm
Chapter 6: Taming my Temper

The chapters are short and I personally think this should be a classroom study book. It can be done in 20 minutes a day with reading and a discussion. It is also a good family book to read and discuss.
Sonya Carson kept telling her sons, Ben and Curtis, they have a brain that God gave them so use it. One became an engineer and the other a doctor.
Dr. Carson tells about his childhood, his jobs, his surgeries, his temper and his family. He is a very religious man and talks about God. He encourages young people to T.H.I.N.K.B.I.G. These are chapters 14-21.
One of my granddaughters asked me what was my pet peeve and I said "telling a lie" because one forgets what they said in a lie but remembers the truth; something I always told my sons and daughter as I raised them. The next day, I see that Dr. Carson said the same thing in his book.
I will give this a 5 star rating. I also read Gifted Hands after I saw the movie.

This book should be given to every high school and college student!

I read Ben Carson's book, Gifted Hands, many years ago and was so inspired I gave it to a woman who works with inner city teens. So I was very interested in this book written specifically for teenagers.

At first I thought it a rather odd title but when one begins reading, you find out what the title means, his mother was always telling her two boys to "use their brains"... not only with education but in common sense living. Not to mention it is a play on Dr. Carson being one of the worlds most famous neurosurgeons.

I liked it even better than Gifted Hands, which is an autobiography. While this book also provides the story of how he went from failing school to becoming the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, it also gives a lot of excellent specific advice on becoming the best person they can become... whatever God has planned for them.

I have found it difficult to find a book written by a very devoted Christian that helps young people succeed in the secular world. Perhaps I'm not reading them. But I still believe this is one of those rare books that will inspire young people in their studies, interests, reading, career goals... and their relationship to Christ!

I must add a caveat here, this books is an excellent read for college students and adults. I'd give it as a gift for any person needing inspiration in their current education (especially young people struggling in school) as well as we adults who need reminding that God has gifted us uniquely.

Great motivational book for preteens and teens!!

I bought this book for my son who has been struggling with his self confidence in school. He is not yet a teenager, he's actually ten but I have noticed a big change in him since reading this book. He even volunteered for his school's quiz bowl and came in 3rd place. I'm so proud of him. I recommend this book to all parents with preteens and teens. There are even discussion questions in the back of the book so that you can have a meaningful discussion with your child.

About the Author

Judith E. Rink, PhD, began her career as an elementary physical education teacher in 1965. She is a professor in the physical education department at the University of South Carolina, where she taught for nearly 30 years and served as department chair for more than 10 years. She has received numerous awards throughout her career, including the Teacher Educator Honor Award from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) in 2007 and the NASPE Hall of Fame Award in 2000.

Rink has authored or coauthored six other physical education and physical activity books and has written dozens of articles for refereed publications. She has presented numerous papers at state, national, and international conferences, and she serves as the South Carolina physical education assessment program director. She also serves on the NASPE Assessment Task Force and served on NASPE’s board of directors from 2003 to 2006.

Tina J. Hall, PhD, is an assistant professor in the physical education department at the University of South Carolina. She taught elementary and middle school physical education for 18 years and conducted several programs similar to those addressed in this book. She has conducted numerous workshops and in-services for physical education teachers, encouraging them to take a leadership role in promoting schoolwide physical activity, and has also conducted workshops and in-services for classroom teachers to help them provide opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day.

Hall has taught physical education for elementary classroom teachers since 2002 and has taken a lead role in physical activity training for physical educators and classroom teachers in South Carolina. She is a member of NASPE and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). She was named the Tennessee AHPERD Teacher of the Year in 1995.

Lori H. Williams, PhD, is an assistant professor at the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. She has taught physical education at the elementary, middle school, and college levels and has taught other subject matter at the elementary and middle school levels. Her 25 years of teaching experience includes 14 years in public schools. She served as president of the South Carolina Association for Physical Education and Sport in 2006; during her tenure as president she developed material and initiated workshops for physical activity directors in South Carolina elementary schools.

The purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to the basic concepts of traditional analog electronic communications systems and to expand the reader's knowledge of more modern digital, optical fiber, microwave, satellite, data, and cellular telephone communications systems. The book was written so that a reader with previous knowledge in basic electronic principles and an understanding of mathematics through the fundamental concepts of calculus will have little trouble understanding the topics presented. Within the text, there are numerous examples that emphasize the most important concepts. Questions and problems are included at the end of each chapter and answers to selected problems are provided at the end of the book.

This edition of Electronic Communications Systems: Fundamentals Through Advanced provides a modern, comprehensive coverage of the field of electronic communications. Although nothing has been omitted from the previous edition, there are several significant additions, such as three new chapters on telephone circuits and systems, two new chapters on cellular and PCS telephone systems, and three new chapters on the fundamental concepts of data communications and networking. In addition, numerous new figures have been added and many figures have been redrawn. The major topics included in this edition are as follows.

Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the basic concepts of electronic communications systems and includes a new section on power measurements using dB and dBm. This chapter defines modulation and demodulation and describes the electromagnetic frequency spectrum. Chapter 1 also defines bandwidth and information capacity and how they relate to one another, and provides a comprehensive description of noise sources and noise analysis.

Chapters 2 and 3 discuss signals, signal analysis, and signal generation using discrete and linear-integrated circuits. Chapter 3 gives a comprehensive coverage of phase-locked loops.

Chapters 4 through 8 describe analog communications systems, such as amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), phase modulation (PM), and single sideband (SSB). A comprehensive mathematical and theoretical description is given for each modulation technique and the basic components found in analog transmitters and receivers are described in detail.

Chapter 9 discusses the fundamental concepts of digital modulation, including comprehensive descriptions of amplitude-shift keying (ASK), frequency-shift keying (FSK), phase-shift keying (PSK), quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK). Chapters 10 and 11 describe the basic concepts of digital transmission and multiplexing. Chapter 10 describes pulse code modulation, while Chapter 11 describes time-division multiplexing of PCM-encoded signals and explains the North American Digital Hierarchy and the North American FDM Hierarchy. Wavelength division multiplexing of light waves is also introduced in Chapter 11.

Chapters 12 through 15 describe the fundamental concepts of electromagnetic waves, electromagnetic wave propagation, metallic and optical fiber transmission lines, free-space wave propagation, and antennas.

Chapters 16 through 18 give a comprehensive description of telephone instruments, signals, and wireline systems used in the public telephone network. Chapters 19 and 20 describe the basic concepts of wireless telephone systems, including cellular and PCS.

Chapters 21 through 23 introduce the fundamental concepts of data communications circuits and describe basic networking fundamentals, such as topologies, error control, protocols, hardware, accessing techniques, and network architectures.

Chapters 24 through 26 describe the fundamental concepts of terrestrial and satellite microwave-radio communications. Chapter 24 describes analog terrestrial microwave systems; Chapters 25 and 26 describe digital satellite systems.

Lots of Little Problems make for one big flaw

Like other reviewers I have found many problems that indicate lack of a quality technical editor. There are several typos per chapter most heavily concentrated in the math sections (missing parenthesis, squares, improper powers, units and just bad math). This has been typical for other editons of this book. I would not suggest using this text in a learning enviroment due to the confusion caused by the numerous typos.

The material is written in an easy way to understand, however, there are many mistakes in the formulas. If you have to use this book, double check the formulas before you do work.

Pastor Lisa is so inspiring. When she was talking about her struggles with things, I felt like she got into my head and put my thoughts in her book. This is such a good book and it captivated me! I read the book in about 4 hours. I didn't want to put the book down.
