Difficult to read on Kindle

I had to get a refund for this and order the paper copy instead.

The syllabus and some of the diagrams were too small to read using Kindle for Mac. I don't know if that would be a problem on an actual Kindle, but when I zoomed in the text got bigger but not the diagrams and tables.

The book itself is really good, but I think the new 2012 version is even better.
Its a shame the new version isn't available on Kindle yet.

Needs better explanation of British terms

I think that the book is very good, but even though I've been riding for years the strictly British terms were less than useful. Simply better explanations of the strictly British terms would elevate this to 5 stars easily.

Living in an Italian small town

I would like to talk about a book I enjoyed very much, Italian Neighbours by Tim Parks.
It is a collection of all the "Italian Experiences" the author made while living in Montecchio near Verona. Being Italian, I found it really amusing and very interesting, because it tells about all the innocent manias we have. It was interesting to see how weird and exotic, if I may say that, some of our typical habits may seem to a foreigner; I mean, sometimes you realize some things are a bit weird and you laugh at them yourself, but sometimes you just cannot realize, because you grew up with that and it is normal for you.
The book is a bit old, so some things have changed slightly, especially in politics (well, not that they have improved anyway), but, you know, people and things change in 15 years...Everything is described with that sort of light irony that is a chracteristic of the English sense of humour, and I enjoyed every bit.
A lot of the things he notices are still there, though, as if they were buried very deep into the Italian soul: well, I know a load of "car worshippers", my aunt is a cleaning freak and so on.
I think what has improved most, at least as far as I know, is the relationship to our pets. The author is shocked for the way people treat their dogs (and rightly so), but now many people changed their minds about animals in the house, and the way they should be treated. I let my cats sleep on my bed and know a lot of people that do too. It is increasingly becoming a true "love affair", even if there are still some people (and I would really like to meet one) that throw away their dog, because they are going on holiday and it is too much of a fuss to take it with them!
Mr.Parks is amazed at the quantity of moped and small vehicles he sees sprinting around, well, I never really took notice of it, before some foreign friends told me: we drive like maniacs!
Some of the things he notices about bureaucracy are the same ones that make us crazy all the time, especially because of their uselessness, even if the situation has improved a bit in the past few years.
I laughed out loud when I read the description of the flat they were going to live in, he said the furniture was awful and "coffin-style" and, having visited many a house in that style I couldn't have found a better definition!
Well, I don't want to spoil your amusement telling you everything, in case you decide to have a go. All I can tell you is that the descriptions are always very detailed, but not heavy or lengthy, just the essentials to make you "see" what he means. I don't always agree with the things he notices, but maybe it is just because he lived in the Veneto and I live in Piedmont; it seems just a small distance, but the way we think and behave is very different (though not as much as between the noeth and the south). I found it even more interesting for that reason, I got to know how it is living over there.
I enjoyed the book so much that I finished it in two days, so now I am reading it again. If you are interested in my country and want to know a bit more than the tourists' impressions I suggest you read Italian Neighbours, I found it very nice.

I felt like someone had shadowed my life!!

* I rented that apartment! (except in ours we found dentures...)

* I had those neighbors, that landlady! (we had different factions calling us on the phone asking details about which other faction may have taken furniture and warning us not to speak to the opposing factions!)

* We had not one but two hound-dogs tied up on the terrace below, in full cry 23 hours out of 24, and each utility bill was in the name of a different dead relative.

I can't think of another book that made me laugh to the point of tears! This is the REAL ITALY (at least, the real Italy as viewed by an Anglo-Saxon). Priceless for anyone thinking of making the move, or who is interested in a regular "slice of life" that isn't all sunflowers and wine, pasta and mandolins... Also worth reading is the continuation in "An Italian Education" but this one is fresher and funnier.

Captures the Incongruities of Italian Life

Even after having lived in Italy, I remained puzzled by some of my Italian Aunt's eccentricities. For instance, she would stop to pick bitter herbs she saw growing from about anywhere and would be seemingly unaware that this constituted bizarre behavior in America. Reading about how a character in the book named Lucilla would stop to do the same brought pleasant memories back and made it clear to me my Aunt's behavior was really about the incongruities of Italian life. The chapter entitled Discreto, Valido, Relativo best captures these incongruities.

Tim Parks does not describe an idyllic Italian paradise. He captures the beauty, and even some of the warts, of everyday life near Verona. His focus is not on restoration of a country home and learning to cook like a native, but on real life. His insights into Italian politics, baffling bureaucratic behavior, and combative neighbors are fascinating and are conveyed with a lightheartedness this subject merits.

Parks does occasionally show his political colors taking swipes at Margaret Thatcher (the book was written a while back) and showing an affinity for the Green movement. At least for me, those sorts of references are somewhat of a detour to the story that blurred the author's focus.

Helpful, practical and modern advice

As a bride-to-be wading through the dozens of issues that come with planning a wedding, Marcy Blum's WEDDING PLANNING FOR DUMMIES has already proven very helpful! Though I have several other books geared toward orchestrating the big day, I appreciated that Blum blended etiquette and history with her tips.

Broken down into easy-to-digest chapters with subheadings about issues as diverse as deciding whether to change your name, what to include in welcome bags for guests and how to (tactfully) let guests know that children aren't invited to receptions, WEDDING PLANNING proved especially helpful in guiding me toward the appropriate wording for wedding invitations.

The guide is a quick read that can be picked up at various points in the wedding-planning process -- so whether you're newly-engaged or already locked into a time, date and place, I think there are nuggets of help for everyone. The guide provides tips for same-sex weddings and celebrations across different faiths, too. I'd already sent save-the-dates and made major decisions when I received the book, but I still found plenty of good advice -- especially on how and why to register for gifts. Blum doesn't get carried away with etiquette or "this is how it SHOULD be done," but she does do a great job of explaining what the "traditional" methods are and contrasts them with more modern approaches. Basically: something for everyone.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the process of planning your big day, WEDDING PLANNING FOR DUMMIES could be a valuable resource for organizing your thoughts and creating an event that is meaningful for you and your beloved. It felt very inclusive and thoughtful, and I dog-eared many pages to return to as we get closer to our wedding.

My (future) mother-in-law gave me this book, and boy am I glad she did! Anyone involved in planning a wedding can benefit from this book. It addresses true-to-life issues that everyone deals with during the planning process. This book calmed me down, and helped me feel more secure about the decisions I was making!

If you are in the throes of planning a wedding or want to plan one in the future this is *the* book to take a look at ...

I'm not a wedding person, per se. In fact some of them I've attended are what nightmares are made of. I can think of one in particular that had people dissing it for ages. This was wrong, that was wrong, so-and-so was offended, etc. The last wedding I went to was so awe-inspiring and memorable that I wouldn't mind going to it again. Undoubtedly, the reason it was such an overwhelming success was because of the planning that went into it. No, it wasn't the result of a wedding planner, but one planned by members of both families. They simply did their homework.

Let's face it, aside from watching numerous episodes of "Say Yes to the Dress," I know nothing about planning weddings. I can tell the difference between a ball gown and a mermaid, but formulating an invitation or scheduling the actual wedding day I am and would be clueless if I didn't study up. I will be the mother of the groom and, provided the lovely couple doesn't elope, I'll be planning it with his future mother-in-law. I definitely selected this book with a purpose in mind. Rather than hysterically flounder when the next "big event" comes up, I'll be prepared.

Yes, there are a few of those cartoons we all appreciate, but fortunately most of the visuals are useful ones. For example, there is a step-by-step one of how one ties the "Four-in-Hand Knot" (it's not something he can do.) There are numerous informative sidebars, tips, tables, and cautionary notes to take a look at. The titles of certain sections are understandably cutesy ("Happy trains to you"), but the information is cogent and quite well-organized. In the back of the book is a very expansive index, something I certainly appreciate.

Planning a wedding does take a lot of effort and simply browsing this book gave me an excellent idea why that one wedding was a disaster. On the other hand, it also told me just why the other one was such a resounding success. Planning, planning, planning. As far as I see it, this book gives people options. When you read this book you can make your wedding tailor-made to fit your budget and whatever style you desire. If you find one area you want to focus on, you can always head to the Internet and expand upon it. There are several recommended websites to explore. In a nutshell, if you are in the throes of planning a wedding or want to plan one in the future this is *the* book to take a look at, especially if you are a wedding dummy like me. Take the effort and you might have one of those memorable weddings instead of a disastrous one ... believe me, we've all seen them and they aren't pretty.

About the Author
Hailed as "the father of Yoga in the West", Paramahansa Yogananda - author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi - is regarded as one of the great spiritual figures of our time. Born in northern India on January 5, 1893, he devoted his life to helping people of all races and creeds to realize and express more fully in their lives the true beauty, nobility, and divinity of the human spirit. After graduating from Calcutta University in 1915, Yogananda took formal vows as a monk of India's venerable monastic Swami Order. Two years later, he began his life's work with the founding of a how-to-live school since grown to twenty-one educational institutions throughout India where traditional academic subjects were offered together with yoga training and instruction in spiritual ideals. In 1920, he was invited to serve as India's delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. His address to the Congress and subsequent lectures on the East Coast were enthusiastically received, and in 1924 he embarked on a cross-continental speaking tour. Over the next three decades, Paramahansa Yogananda contributed in far-reaching ways to a greater awareness and appreciation in the West of the spiritual wisdom of the East. In Los Angeles, he established an international headquarters for Self-Realization Fellowship, the nonsectarian religious society he had founded in 1920. Through his writings, extensive lecture tours, and the creation of Self-Realization Fellowship temples and meditation centers, he introduced hundreds of thousands of truth-seekers to the ancient science and philosophy of Yoga and its universally applicable methods of meditation. Today, the spiritual and humanitarian work begun by Paramahansa Yogananda continues under the direction of Sri Mrinalini Mata, one of his closest disciples and president of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India since 2011. In addition to publishing his writings, lectures and informal talks (including a comprehensive series of Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons for home study), the society also oversees temples, retreats, and centers around the world.

Delicious Chicken One Pot Meal.

What is Biryani? It is a mixture of basmati rice, spices, and chicken all cooked up in one pot meal. This style of cooking comes from a wide area; from North Africa, the Middle East, and more common to regions of India.

Well first off I had never had biryani, but the pictures on the cover urged me to give it a try. So I began my journey into Indian cuisine by cooking the basic recipe. The recipe was easy to follow and very easy to complete. What the outcome was a flavorful meal that will put a smile to your face.

The author takes the time explain all the basics of preparing these dishes and to explain what each spice brings in the line of flavor so you can decide add more or less of each as desired.

This book is for anyone looking to try something new. These meals are full of flavor and your family will love them. I recommend this book and these recipes!
