Good pictures and helpful pointers
By Walter Reade
The beginning and intermediate Judo student will be pleased with book. It is a good introduction to the major Judo techniques, starting with the basics such as falling and unbalancing you opponent, and then introducing a number of the more common techniques (throws, sweeps, chokes, and holds). Each technique is accompanied by a number of pictures showing the progression of the moves (including different variations) as well as good explanatory text.
There is good reason that this book has had 48 printings!

Good for those new to the Sport and Art of Judo
By Chud
Shows the basic Judo moves and techniques in an east to follow format. Starting with how to fall properly to basic and intermediate throws and counter throws. I would recommend this book to people new to Judo and high school/college wrestling, due to it's simplicity and to-the-point photos and movement explainations.

Judo Book
By Edgar
This is one of the old, simple books on Judo. No frills and no extended theory. Just the real stuff done by men who know the sport. This is a great book for any Judo student to learn from and to keep as a reference. Bought a bunch of them as gifts for my Judo students.

Introduction to Modern Algebra and Matrix Theory: Second Edition (Dover Books on Mathematics), by O. Schreier, E. Sperner, Mathematics

This unique text provides students with a single-volume treatment of the basics of calculus and analytic geometry. It reflects the teaching methods and philosophy of Otto Schreier, an influential mathematician and professor. The order of its presentation promotes an intuitive approach to calculus, and it offers a strong emphasis on algebra with minimal prerequisites.
Starting with affine space and linear equations, the text proceeds to considerations of Euclidean space and the theory of determinants, field theory and the fundamental theorem of algebra, elements of group theory, and linear transformations and matrices. Numerous exercises at the end of each section form important supplements to the text.

Mixture of Concrete and Abstract, Elementary and Advanced
By G. A. Schoenagel
First, a preamble regarding the book's contents--as taken from the review for the Mathematical Association of America :
"...more accurate to characterize this wonderful book as a thoroughgoing rendering of linear algebra at a concrete level ..."
And, The Mathematics Teacher: "Outstanding...good introduction...each topic is painstakingly developed."
This is an unusual textbook. No Calculus to be found, yet, a good dose of mathematical maturity is presupposed in
order that a reader will benefit most from its contents. We begin elementary enough: Points,Lines, Planes, thence to
hyperplanes. Linear equations ( that is, the first chapter) given ample discussion surrounding interplay of geometry and algebra.
Note well the discussion: Chapter One paves the way for the remainder of the text. Concrete and Abstract are intertwined
in seamless fashion. The first chapter, of some Fifty pages, contains twenty--or more--Theorems and their respective proofs.
Throw in the Exercises which accompany each section, many diagrams as accompaniment, and and one sees dense thicket.
If Chapter One proceeds without incident, I would claim that the entirety of the text is well within student's grasp.
Second chapter--a favorite--Determinants. Progressing from length to scalar product to area, then to volume one seeks the
(Page 68) all important "function which assigns to any set of n-vectors a uniquely determined real-functional value with the
following Properties...." Elaboration of the properties ensues for well over a hundred pages, with fine discussion of Rigid Motions.
An absolute delight (Pages 153-178) is the elaboration of rigid motions in the Plane and Three-Space. A pretty proof "...that if
the determinant is positive One, the dimension of the vector space is either one or three (it can not be two)..." nicely explicated.
Third Chapter: Fields and the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. Author--" We remove the restriction that our symbols represent
Real Numbers". Elementary Field theory is followed by Polynomials, Complex Numbers, and onward to the Fundamental Theorem.
In fact, Pages 218-228 give a fine abstract (still elementary) presentation of the "Field of Complex Numbers" with the chapter ending
with ten pages of meaningful discussion surrounding the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. Excellent ending to an excellent chapter.
Finite Groups in the following chapter is brief, though lucid (Axioms, Subgroups, Abelian ):We read " Aside from these considerations,
an important reason for our discussion was that it enabled us to introduce ideas and methods whose generalizations will be very
important for the theory of Matrices in the next chapter". Thus, groups discussed as prelude to Linear Transformations and Matrices.
"We shall now concern ourselves with certain sub-spaces which are mapped into themselves", thus begins the wonderful exposition
of Invariant Sub-spaces (nullspace, decompositions, geometric interpretation, unitary and orthogonal transformations) taking one to
book's end and the " illustration of when a matrix can be transformed into one which has only zeros on one side of the main diagonal."
A most satisfying and rewarding excursion. From elementary to advanced, from concrete to abstract. Some of the exercises are
computational (concrete) , many others ask for the complete proofs of statements (abstract) ---thus, not entirely elementary.
If the requisite mathematical maturity is possessed (or, acquired along the way) all will be accessible to an undergraduate student.
A superb companion.

Mathematical Models in Biology (Classics in Applied Mathematics), by Leah Edelstein-Keshet

Mathematical Models in Biology is an introductory book for readers interested in biological applications of mathematics and modeling in biology. Connections are made between diverse biological examples linked by common mathematical themes, exploring a variety of discrete and continuous ordinary and partial differential equation models. Although great advances have taken place in many of the topics covered, the simple lessons contained in Mathematical Models in Biology are still important and informative. Shortly after the first publication of Mathematical Models in Biology, the genomics revolution turned Mathematical Biology into a prominent area of interdisciplinary research. In this new millennium, biologists have discovered that mathematics is not only useful, but indispensable! As a result, there has been much resurgent interest in, and a huge expansion of, the fields collectively called mathematical biology. This book serves as a basic introduction to concepts in deterministic biological modeling.

The very BEST book on the subject
By A Customer
There are lots of books about mathematical modeling, and many of them cover biological systems. But no book I've ever seen even comes close to the quality of this beautiful work by Edelstein-Keshet. So what is it that makes this book so special? First of all, the book is both accessible and self-contained. Just start at the beginning, and you're guaranteed to learn A LOT of math. Second, the style of writing and the way in which the author presents the material is utterly beautiful. It is impossible NOT to understand, but the material is not at all 'chewed out' for the reader. Third of all, the book really encourages the reader to pick up pen and paper, go out there and MODEL something; dozens of inspiring and high-quality exercises and research projects are to be found throughout the book. Fourth, the various techniques are easily applied to non-biological problems. Fifth, the book will help to gain insight in the qualitative aspects of biological phenomena. What Peter Atkins is to chemistry, Edelstein-Keshet is to mathematical biology. Sadly, she is not as widely known. Get this book while you can!

math models in biology
By V. Davide
This is a nice introductory book on math biology models. It is easy to understand and a necessary reading for those who want to approach more difficult books such as Mathematical Physiology. The exercises presented are useful for active learning of this topic.
Be aware: this book requires prior knowledge of calculus (differential equations, partial derivatives, Taylor series expansion...).

Classic textbook, with some flaws
By T. Glimm
A classic textbook in mathematical biology, and still one of the best I know. It is a testament to the quality of this book that many other textbooks that have been published after it essentially follow the template of this book.

No other book does a better job at explaining clearly and concisely the biological background. The tone is precise and approachable without being aloof.

There are two flaws about this book: One is the mathematical exposition, which is sometimes simply wrong. (The whole section about the Hopf bifurcation is very poor, and I couldn't use this section in classes I taught. It has to be supplemented by other textbooks.) The other, related, flaw is the flood of typos. This is the text with the most typos I've ever seen. (The latest errata list has 16 pages, and there are still many unlisted typos.) And this is the second edition! Normally typos don't bother me too much, but there are so many here that it truly becomes a nuisance.

Overall, though, this is a good textbook. I wish the author would decide to update the text and clean up the typos and some of the math sections.

The Three Musketeers (Modern Library Classics), by Alexandre Dumas pere

First published in 1844, Alexandre Dumas's swashbuckling epic chronicles the adventures of D'Artagnan, a gallant young nobleman who journeys to Paris in 1625 hoping to join the ranks of musketeers guarding Louis XIII. He soon finds himself fighting alongside three heroic comrades—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis—who seek to uphold the honor of the king by foiling the wicked plots of Cardinal Richelieu and the beautiful spy "Milady." As Clifton Fadiman reflected, "We read The Three Musketeers to experience a sense of romance and for the sheer excitement of the story. In these violent pages all is action, intrigue, suspense, surprise—an almost endless chain of duels, murders, love affairs, unmaskings, ambushes, hairbreadth escapes, wild rides. It is all impossible and it is all magnificent."

Grade 6 Up-With swelling musical background, the clash of swordplay, and the occasional thump of a head being cut off, the St. Charles Players bring back the feeling of radio theater in their rendition of the classic tale by Alexandre Dumas. The players' voices emit every nuance required to let listeners experience the swashbuckling deeds of the famous heroic threesome and the boy called D'Artagnan who wants to join their ranks. When the young man arrives in Paris with the wish to enlist with the King's Musketeers, he finds himself challenged to three duels in his first afternoon in the city by men who turn out to be Porthos, Aramis, and Athos-the Three Musketeers. Instead of fighting against them, the twists of fate have D'Artagnan battling for them against the evil Cardinal Richelieu's guards. After demonstrating his worth with a sword, D'Artagnan proves more of his mettle by journeying to England to foil a plot to embarrass France's Queen Anne, the former Anne of Austria. D'Artagnan saves his queen but loses the woman he loves, so he seeks vengeance and, in turn, instills himself firmly in the ranks of the Musketeers. The flavor of the original is evident even though this abridged version includes only highlights in its retelling.

From Library Journal
A perennial favorite, this work continues to hold appeal for adventure lovers. Full of intrigue, swordplay, and revenge, it is the story of d'Artagnan, a young nobleman who travels to Paris in hopes of joining the Musketeers, a group of swashbuckling adventurers who serve King Louis XIII. His wit and fighting ability make d'Artagnan a welcome addition to their ranks, and together the four young men work to foil the King's evil rival, Cardinal Richelieu. Despite the period setting and constant violence, the story captures and sustains the listener's interest as the Musketeers vanquish the villains. Michael York reads superbly, his rich baritone voice giving each role convincing clarity. The audio format is particularly suited to the tale. The production quality is excellent. Recommended for general collections.

Review
"I do not say there is no character as well-drawn in Shakespeare [as D'Artagnan]. I do say there is none that I love so wholly."

Huzzah!
By Stephen Balbach
An "endless adventure" breathlessly moving from one scene to the next: sword-fighting, court espionage, sex scandals, poisonings, assassinations, undying love and so on.

'Les Trois Mousquetaires', first published in 1844, was soon translated into three English versions by 1846. One of these, by William Barrow, is still in print and fairly faithful to the original, available in the Oxford World's Classics 1999 edition. However all of the explicit and many of the implicit references to sexuality had been removed to conform to 19th century English standards of morality, thus making the scenes between d'Aragnan and Milady, for example, confusing and strange. The most recent and new standard English translation is by award-winning translator Richard Pevear (2006). Pevear says in his translation notes that most of the modern translations available today are "textbook examples of bad translation practices" which "give their readers an extremely distorted notion of Dumas's writing." Thankfully we have high quality translations like this one now available.

Both entertaining and insightful.
By Michael J. Skarpelos
All translators must struggle with two competing goals: 1) being faithful to the original author and 2) making the translated text accessible to the reader. In this translation of _The Three Musketeers_, the translator, Richard Pevear, generally gravitates towards the first goal. His vocabulary choices almost always favor the original French usage rather than modern English usage. For example, early in the book, Pevear refers to Milady as Rochefort's "interlocutrix". Now I don't know about you, but I grew up going to California public schools, and if I ever used a word like "interlocutrix", I'd get my face bashed into a locker. My background notwithstanding, I think it's clear what's going on here. The word "interlocutrix" is an uncommon yet legitimate English word with French roots. Pevear has chosen to use the uncommon word in order to remain faithful to Dumas' original French text which presumably used the French cognate for "interlocutrix" whatever that is.

I could come up with literally dozens of such examples, and eventually I just started keeping a separate list of obscure words and definitions so I only needed to refer to a short list rather than slog through the dictionary every time I came upon one of those recurring obscure words. By the time I finished the book, I had a five page (12 pt. Times New Roman type, single-spaced) list of obscure words. They range from 17th century French clothing ("tabard", "doublet", "jerkin") to horse-related terminology ("caparison", "sorrel", "croup") to 17th century military terminology ("counterscarp", "revetments", "circumvallation") and many others. In all these cases, I'm convinced that Pevear chose to use the English cognates of original French words rather than more modern English equivalents.

In fairness to Pevear, he does provide extensive notes explaining the historical references made by Dumas, which is extremely reader-friendly, and I profited from them greatly. Even in these notes, however, he leaves out some obvious choices such as "Rosinante" and "Circe".

In short, if you're an English speaker with no knowledge of French but would like to get a feel for Dumas' prose style and usage, this is the book for you. It is a remarkably faithful translation that really gives you a feel for the nuances of the original text. If you're unfamiliar with the obscure words chosen for the translation but are willing to make repeated trips to the dictionary (or keep a side list as I did), you'll be richly rewarded with keener understanding of life in 17th century France as well as a greater appreciation of Dumas' prose style.

For what it's worth, a doublet is close fitting jacket worn by European men in the 16th and 17th centuries; a jerken is a hip-length collarless and sleeveless jacket worn over a doublet, and a tabard is a tunic or cape-like garment emblazoned with a coat of arms. A caparison is an ornamental covering for a horse or for its saddle or harness; a sorrel is a brownish-orange colored horse, and a croup is the rump of a beast of burden, especially a horse. A counterscarp is the outer side of a ditch used in fortifications; revetments is a barricade against explosives, and circumvallation is the act of surrounding with a rampart. Rosinante is the name of Don Quixote's horse, and Circe is the goddess of Greek mythology who turned Odysseus's men temporarily into pigs but later gave him directions for their journey home. And an interlocutrix is simply a woman who is participating in a conversation.

I'll close with my favorite quote from the book, spoken by Cardinal Richelieu. He was musing about finding someone to assassinate the Duke of Buckingham, but Milady argued that potential assassins would be afraid to proceed for fear of "torture and death". Le Cardinal replied, "In all times and in all countries, especially if those countries are divided by religion, there will always be fanatics who ask for nothing better than to be made martyrs." It's as true today as it was when Dumas' wrote it more than 160 years ago.

150 Years Later and Still Just As Popular
By Michael Wischmeyer
Long lines wait impatiently outside book shops for the latest issue of the magazine Le Siecle. On the streets and in cafes Parisians talked excitedly about each new installment of the thrilling adventure story, The Three Musketeers. (Like many novels written in the mid-1800s, Dumas' novel was serialized in a magazine before being published as a book.)

The public quickly recognized that a new literary genre had appeared - a fast paced, action story based upon a historical event. Previous historical fiction now seemed slow, wordy, and even archaic.

What is even more surprising is that 150 years later The Three Musketeers remains widely popular, both in print and on screen. Exciting duels, close escapes, political intrigues, and chivalrous romance still capture the imagination of today's readers.

Today's public undoubtedly remembers more about French history - at least history according to Alexandre Dumas - from The Three Musketeers, and its sequels, than from high school and university classes. Athos, Porthos, and Aramis - and their friend D'Artagnan, the irrepressible, courageous, handsome young Gascon who aspires to become a Musketeer himself - are modern icons. Similarly, Dumas' portrayal of King Louis XIII, Queen Anne of Austria, and Cardinal Richelieu are decidedly more interesting than the dry, factual historical characters found in textbooks.

And it impossible to forget the enchanting, notorious, and dangerous Milady de Winter, one of the more dramatic and memorable character created by any author. I am somewhat disappointed that Milady is fictional.

Choices: There are several good translations of Three Musketeers, including paperbacks like the Bantam Classic and Signet Classic editions. The slightly more expensive Oxford World's Classics edition is also quite good, and it offers an extended introduction and other supplementary material. Trident Press offers an attractive, deluxe gift edition profusely illustrated with the original ink drawings by Maurice Leloir. This version is a reprint of an edition first published by Thomas Y. Crowell and Company in Boston in 1879.

Advice: I strongly caution you to avoid the abridged editions. The Three Musketeers is indeed a lengthy novel, but it is one that warrants reading in its entirety, especially if you might someday read one of its sequels, like Twenty Years After or The Man in the Iron Mask.

Placing the Plays of Christopher Marlowe: Fresh Cultural Contexts, by Sara Munson Deats

Focusing upon Marlowe the playwright as opposed to Marlowe the man, the essays in this collection position the dramatist's plays within the dramaturgical, ethical, and sociopolitical matrices of his own era. The volume also examines some of the most heated controversies of the early modern period, such as the anti-theatrical debate, the relations between parents and children, Machiavaellis ideology, the legitimacy of sectarian violence, and the discourse of addiction. Some of the chapters also explore Marlowe's polysemous influence on the theater of his time and of later periods, but, most centrally, upon his more famous contemporary poet/playwright, William Shakespeare.
