Dianna Friedman never expected her husband to leave her. Who does? But she’s making the most of what she has left–a sarcastic near-grown son and a mountain of bills that just keeps growing. She’s in over her head, but she is determined to survive.
Everyone else may have seen it coming, but Paul O’Connell was blindsided by his wife’s betrayal. Determined to prevent her from bleeding him dry during their divorce, he turns to the only person he thinks can help him—the wife of his wife’s lover.
Dianna and Paul become fast friends and maybe a tad bit over-dependent on each other, but who are they hurting? No one. At least not until Dianna’s life takes yet another unexpected twist and she and Paul have to step back and reevaluate everything…including what they mean to each other.

Review
Review for Friends Without Benefits: A stranger can be a broken heart's best friend.
Dianna Friedman isn't a spunky Stonehill heroine who faces her troubles with snark: she's real. She cries, she falls behind on her bills, she breaks coffee mugs--sometimes full ones. After catching her husband with another woman, Dianna stress eats, drags herself to yoga with friends, and finds herself in a most unusual new friendship: with the ex-husband of the woman who she'd found bent over her husband's desk.
What makes this story so compelling is how much there is of me, of you, of each of us in Dianna. We've been there, we've felt it, we've struggled. We've had dreams torn wide open. We've been forced to contemplate which of our choices will lead to the least amount of pain. And in the end, we do find second chances...if we're strong enough to grow past the choices that led us down that road in the first place.
Friends Without Benefits brings life's complexities literally into our kitchen, our bedrooms, our bank accounts. Through Dianna we see how a family falling apart can emerge in new, and yes, even better, configurations. Poignant, true, and sharp, Friends Without Benefits is the rich, engaging story of how the very things we believe will destroy us can truly reveal the best of who we are.

character driven novel about human emotions and family relationships
By L. Jenkins
This book captured my attention right away. It is very well-written with believable dialogue and emotions. The narrative flows with passion as the main characters experience heartbreak and then somehow find the courage and gumption to move on. It’s a process, and I felt the author conveyed the ups and downs and insecurity with compassion.
I particularly liked that Dianna and Paul were not afraid to do a lot of soul searching, and used the time of grief and, in Dianna’s case financial adversity, to throw off some of their old, negative habits and slowly recreate themselves into stronger people with more balanced and stronger personalities. I also liked that not everything was easily resolved. Some issues required more work and even harder determination – none of the characters were perfect. I had a hard time relating to Dianna’s tears with each new blow she faced, but I had to respect her grit and stubborn resolve to keep trying in spite of everything.
I also really liked that both Dianna and Paul retained a sense of humor that would sometimes surface at odd moments. That made me love them both all the more and cheer their topsy-turvy progress. Yet another aspect of this book I really enjoyed was Paul’s backstory and his nosey, bossy siblings.
If you enjoy character driven novels about human emotions and family relationships this book is one that you should read.
This book was provided to me in exchange for my honest review.

The Aftermath of Divorce and a Chance for a New, Mature Love
By Lisa S. / Royal Lioness Lisa blog
Paul's wife and Dianna's husband cheat with each other. Dianna caught them. Mitch, her husband of over 20 years, decided to leave her for Michelle, Paul's wife. This story is of the aftermath of the cheating and what happens to the spouses of the cheaters. I really enjoyed that there was no 'insta-love'. They were friends without benefits, allowing them to heal from their divorces and begin to fall in love.
There was a twist in the story that I think added to the poignancy of the pain of the divorces. Other romances sometimes gloss over the aftermath of the divorce to jump into falling in love with someone new. This story showed how Dianna's sons were affected as well as her trying to adjust financially.
Karma can take an unexpected turn, if you are open to dealing with a situation, rather than shutting down in pity, anger, or bitterness. Dianna was the housewife who was forced to make changes and grew, despite the pain and confusion. I liked the development of her character. She was easy to identify with and relate to.
I enjoyed the pace of this. There was enough time for Paul and Dianna to react to the divorces and to become friends. There were some uncomfortable scenes where they did not handle things well with their ex-spouses, Mitch and Michelle.
I discovered this book for free through the Ebook Discovery Read and Review Club. I am so very glad that I did. I have discovered a new author, and I will be reading more from this series on my own. I'm looking forward to Annie's story.

Five very well deserved STARS!
By D.H
I loved this book so much! When I read what the book was about, I thought I might like it, I liked that these people were more close to my age and could maybe relate to them somewhat, but wasn't sure I wanted to read about ex's getting involved with ex's! But glad that that did not stop me from reading it anyways! This book has everything I like in a book!
All Dianna and Paul are trying to do at first is figure out what went wrong in their lives and marriages! Having both going through bitter divorces, Dianna a 22 year marriage with grown children and Paul married 3 years, meet because Paul needs Dianna to testify at his divorce hearing because it was her who caught her husband with his wife! This is not about two people who meet, fall in love and live happily ever after! This a book about two people who meet and come to rely on each other and help get through this time in their lives. I loved every character in this book! Diannas two sons, Her BFF, Pauls Brother and sister and even Dianna's scumbag husband! But not till the end of the book! I felt everything they felt! I cried when they cried, got mad when they did, laughed when they laughed! Its a very emotional journey they went through that I was glad to be on with
them! There are a book 1 and 3 I can't wait to read, they are stand alone but wished Id read book 1 first! I highly recommend this book!
