How and why behavioral designers can help us to make much better decisions

As Iris Bohnet explains, this book is the result of a nearly ten-year journey that began when David Ellwood, then dean of Harvard Kennedy School, invited her to serve as faculty chair and later director of the Women and Public Policy Program (WAPPP), one of the Kennedy School’s research centers.

“The book’s goal is to offer good designs it you; designs that make it easier for our biased minds to get things right. Based on research evidence, we can change the environments in which we live, learn, and work. My principal focus here is the stubborn, costly problem of gender inequality, but the recommendations I make stem from a wealth or research about decisions and behavior that go well beyond gender. The book takes as a given that people make mistakes; they make them often and (sometimes) unknowingly, As a consequence, these mistakes reduce everyone’s well-being.” She goes to suggest that the solutions she recommends come from the field of behavioral economics, “building on insights on how our mind works.”

She invites her reader to become a behavioral designer and I hope each reader accepts this invitation because those who read this brilliant book — not Iris Bohnet — will need to achieve the behavioral changes in their respective environments. Think of this book as both a call to action and an operations manual. It provides just about all the information, instruction, insights, and counsel that anyone needs to help create and sustain healthier environments. It must be a collaborative environment.

It is important to keep in mind that behavioral design “goes beyond law, regulation, or incentives, although it acknowledges that these are and will remain important. But they do not always work…We do not always do what is best for ourselves, for our organizations, or for the world — and sometimes a little nudge helps.” For example, as Bohnet notes, orchestras that conduct blind auditions (i.e. candidates perform behind a screen) can be transformed by doubling the talent pool. “Careful timing of breaks allows judges to make decisions more accurately and fairly. To the business case, then, we must add the moral case: behavioral design is the right thing to do.”

After offering 36 research-driven design suggestions in this book, Bohnet suggests some key design principles, focusing on “the four areas that we have covered in this book: training, talent management, school and work, and diversity. These become useful shorthand aspirations as you introduce any single or several designs.” For example:

1. Training: Move from “training” to “capacity building.”
2. Talent Management: Move from “intuition” to “data” and “structure.”
3. School and Work: Move from an “uneven” to an “even” playing field.
4. Diversity: Move from a “numbers game” to the “conditions for success.”

These transitions can be completed only if and when those involved recognize when and why learning the sex of someone immediately activates gender biases that can (and usually do) lead to unintentional and implicit discrimination. This book cannot totally eliminate those biases but it can make people much more aware of them and their potential influence.

I congratulate Bohnet on a brilliant achievement and share her deep conviction that, through behavioral design, “we can move the needle toward creating equal opportunities for female musicians, for male teachers, and for everyone else. Good design often harvests low-hanging fruit, left on the tree not so much because if bad intentions but rather because of the mind bugs that affect our judgment. Behavioral design offers an additional instrument for our collective toolbox to promote change; it complements other approaches focusing, for example, on equal rights, education, health, agency, or on policies making work and family compatible.” Also healthier for everyone involved.

Some who read my brief commentary may say, “All that is fine and dandy but what can I do or only a few of us do?” I presume to remind them of Margaret Mead’s observation, one with which both Iris Bohnet and I totally agree: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has."

Beginning with Max's ancestry and early years, Marianne Weber guides us through his life as student, young lawyer, scholar and political writer, quoting liberally from his voluminous correspondence. Make Me Great

For a book written by the author when in his 30s (I may be off by a few years), this is incredible. First, because Churchill himself wrote it, and not some professional writer. Second, because of the extreme detail, which suggests either an incredible memory, or a willingness to make up finely constructed overlays of fiction. Maybe this is a little of both. Churchill either covers his tracks well, or presents the facts very pleasantly.
His mom ignores him and his dad holds about 3 substantive conversations with him. In return, he idolizes and idealizes both, consoling himself by getting in trouble at school, and playing army at home. Like a latter-day Peter the Great, his childhood army games lay a foundation for adult army leadership, although Churchill stays more constrained than the despotic Russian. He maintains, however, a raw animal side to his spirit which stays intact his whole life, resulting, in one memorable event about 40 or 45 years after this book cuts off with Churchill's marriage, where Churchill pauses on an inspection of a European battlefield after the defeat of Germany to urinate on the famed "Siegfried Line" in front of a group of military dignitaries. Naughty boy to the end.
Churchill convincingly puts himself back into young boy mode and preserves for us portraits of his nurse, Mrs. Everest, the hatefulness of boarding school, and the release of achieving self-actualization in the form of military school at Sandhurst, and then a whirlwind of military adventures on several continents, arranged mostly by his influential and adulterous mother. Not much adultery here, but William Manchester goes through it in detail in his first of the two-volume set "The Last Lion." Churchill never criticizes his mother; he just takes maximum advantage of her contacts.
In a double inversion of himself as the subject, this is a great summary of how Churchill decided to become a great man by first getting noticed in the middle of adventures, and writing about them during and afterwards. Plus getting paid for the writing to support himself on a scale correlative to other British subjects who either inherited it, or made it big in business. But it was all substrate for his political ambitions.
Teddy Roosevelt thought Churchill was a "show off." Which is probably true, and which comes out clearly in the video-ization of this book, under the name of "Young Winston." But he seems to have been a lovable showoff, and if Kennedy had not intervened, American political aspirants may instead be more self-consiously modeling themselves on Young Winston.
One problem: John Churchill had no male offspring, according to the family tree Winston added to his biography of Marlborough. No problem, just call yourself a Churchill, not a "Spencer-Churchill" or even a "Spencer" and just go to market as a Churchill. Plus make yourself great. He definitely did, and this book records what it also produces.

A very entertaining read

This is a very interesting, fast-paced book that provides a good introduction to Winston Churchill. Indeed, after reading this I was compelled to read "The Unruly Giant", which is a very solid biography recently written by Norman Rose giving further insight into this fascinating historical charactor.
I agree with the other reviewer in saying that Churchill provides an amazing amount of detail about the early exploits of his life, leading one to wonder just how much of it really happpened and how much he chose to embellish when writing this book some years later. Also, Churchill's constant references to contemporary events are sometimes confusing and frustrating unless one knows a lot of the history of the British empire and its political scene during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
None the less, it is a good book to start with if one wishes to learn about one of the 20th century's truly great men.

Sarah's joy in a promising new life is threatened when her father loses his first good job. The family's financial crisis is somewhat alleviated by having a great-aunt come to live with them--with the result that Sarah must give up her dream bedroom and stay with crotchety Aunt Margaret while both parents are at work. Difficulties increase as strange events begin to occur and Sarah's mother refuses to consider Sarah's suggestion that there is a ghost, implying that Sarah is lying, and forcing her and Aunt Margaret to cope alone with the escalating violence of a malevolent spirit that turns out to be from Aunt Margaret's youth. Afraid that she too will be doubted, Aunt Margaret keeps her own counsel, resolving to return to her nursing home. In a final hair-raising encounter, Sarah helps rout the ghost, which also leads to everyone's realization that they truly are a family. Many of the motifs here will be comfortingly familiar to Wright's fans: a successful meld of family living and the satisfyingly scary supernatural. Huh?

Maybe this book was little too young for me. I just expected more from the author of THE DOLLHOUSE MURDERS, I was sorely disappointed when the plot became immature and pointless. The book starts out exciting enough, when Sarah is forced to move out of her room for her cranky old Aunt. As always, the relationships and character developement are the highlight of Ms. Ren Wright's story, but that alone will not be enough to entertain a reader who wants a ghost story. The plot becomes absurd and unbeliveable evn for a ghost story. In this book, I wasn't very interested in the characters and Ms. Ren Wright seems to hope that the entire book with stand on that alone, but in the the end it cannot. The ending left me saying "Huh?" because it was simply pointless. It just seemed like there should be more to it. The already ridiculous plot was resolved far too easily and the ending resolution will leave readers feeling cheated, and disappointed.

Sarah moved to a new home which used to be her Great Aunt Magaret's house. Few weeks later her aunt moved in from the Nursery. After that, strange things began to happened when Sarah and her aunt are along in the house. Like the light turns on by themselves and the rooms get deathy cold and Sarah hears strange footsteps in the upstairs hall. And everytime Sarah looked at a painting she found( which was her aunt's) she sees that the painting has changed. I think you should read this book because it is scary. So grab " A Ghost In The House" By Betty Ren Wright and start reading! Also enjoy other books by betty Ren Wright. See Ya!

About the Author
Robert L. Davis is Associate Professor and the Director of the Spanish Language Program at the University of Oregon and Assistant Director of the Spanish Summer Language School at Middlebury College. He teaches courses in Spanish language, historical linguistics, and teaching methodology. His interests include language pedagogy and materials development, in particular the development of language skills within content-based instruction. He has written an advanced oral skills textbook and articles on language pedagogy, materials development, and language program direction.

Alicia Ramos is Associate Professor of Spanish and Coordinator of the basic language program in French, Italian, and Spanish at Hunter College (CUNY) in New York. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, has served on the faculties of Barnard College and Indiana University of Pennsylvania and as Assistant Director of the Spanish School at Middlebury College. Dr. Ramos’ interests include methodology and materials development for courses from the elementary through advanced levels, including courses for Spanish speakers. Dr. Ramos has published in the field of Hispanic literature and has co-authored intermediate and advanced level textbooks including Cofre literario (2003, McGraw-Hill), a literary reader for the intermediate and advanced levels.

One of the worst ways to learn Spanish.

A friend of mine has to use this book for her first Spanish course at Hunter College and I've been trying to help her through it. First of all this book has no learning curve to it. They should go through more basics without throwing so many new words(each chapter and without explanations) that new students can't possibly know without prior instruction.

Second, it doesn't help trying to learn a new language and then not having the sufficient trust in your own ability, because you can't follow what the book is saying.

And last but one of the MOST important parts, I understand what the author is TRYING to say, in respect to, Spanish is different from culture to culture, BUT it is impossible to learn Spanish using every single culture. Every culture of Spanish has different ways of saying the same words, they have different pronunciations, and they even talk at a faster or slower rate. I spoke with my Grandmother who is a professor in my home country and she admits that when they take Spanish as a language they try to teach it as close to the original Spanish, which comes from Spain, as possible.

This book also has many errors in it, reading through the questions in chapter 5 made me feel like the author/editors got lazy and just used a translator. I don't mean to bash, and I don't want to be too harsh. There are many ways that this book can improve,such as simple things like more exercises in the beginning for vocabulary building.

I want to put an additional beware tag for Hunter College Students: the author of this book is the head of the department, which is why you will have to put up with this, if you really want to learn Spanish, be prepared to work hard and look to outside sources for help.

This textbook ruined my life

Someone said it best...this textbook is a disorganized mess. It does not follow the conventional model of a textbook in that it doesn't start easy (or basic) and get harder. There is no rhyme or reason to it yet EVERY beginning Spanish professor in our school uses it. It's just awful. I have to use two other resources to make up for the gaping holes in this program. I fear for my GPA!

Choose your poison

One of the interesting things about this book is the addition of an alternate ending. For those who find cuckolding of the husband appealing the added ending is sure to please. For myself the slightly more 'happy' ending was the one I chose. Of course for the husband in any of Ann's stories whether the ending is 'happy' is a matter of perspective.

Because the main character's motives are less than pure we can watch his slow humiliation and feminization with a certain degree of satisfaction though the pendulum always swings much further in the other direction. Still that's what the story is all about - a man trapping himself into subjugation by his wife or girlfriend or secretary. It's a time honored trope that Ann always does well.

Ann also gives value for the money fleshing out her stories with more detail (though sometimes a bit repetitive) so you don't feel cheated at the end. This story doesn't carry the humiliation wallop that 'Humiliation at the Office' does but then the relationship between the two main characters is not so adversarial so the things the wife does are at least tempered a bit by her deep down love of her husband. This makes the read a little easier on the mind for me but others may find it less compelling for the same reason. For those readers the alternate ending probably is more satisfactory.

The 4 star review comes from the missed opportunities and loose plot ends in this story. The whole story supposedly revolves around the hypnosis tapes and yet in the end they play a much lesser role than they could have as the author quickly morphed along the simpler power dynamics of blackmail and humiliation.

Ann Michelle's books are always a great value. They are a good deal longer then most of what you fine in the genre and that length is earned, it's not a filter. " More Then He Bargained For" adds a new twist Ru thus equation by including an alternate ending for cuckold fans. Personally, I prefer the noncuckold version of this story, but I enjoyed reading both and I enjoyed seeing how the story could have ended differently.

"More Then He Bargained For" is the story of a man who wants his wife to dominate him, but she doesn't seem to have a dominate bone in get body. To fix this, he buys a tape which is supposed to hypnotize her. Naturally, she discovers what he's done and she sets out to teach him a lesson. This lesson results in him being dominated and feminized at home and at with by his secretaries. A fun fantasy.

This is an excellent story and it's well done. There are many exciting twists and turns and I enjoyed the relationships very much. I definitely recommend adding this to your connection.

Confusion and not much else.

Can't say too much good about this story of Tiffany and Jeff. Jeff does lose his macho attitude and get humiliated by being feminized by his wife, but more and more I'm becoming convinced this author doesn't know what she's writing about when it comes to female domination.
As the story progresses, she misses so many opportunities to take Jeff's humiliation to a new level, but she always misses the boat or skips over the possibilities to subject Jeff to. One huge example is while vacationing with a new lover, Tiffany leaves Jeff in the care of the women of his office, Helen, Clara, and Linda, who Jeff used to dominate, but who he's now dominated by. Jeff's chastity device is revealed to the women who are intensely curious and suddenly want to force him to climax despite not having the key to the device (Tiffany has the key). Clara declares there must be a way and just when you think Jeff is in for a night of hard strap-on or fisting degradation, the author skips to the next scene. A huge buzz kill.
Not worth the price or the time.

A field guide to growing up male in early 21st Century America.

We live in an age where the Progressive Ideal is eternal youth and eternal adolescence. A life of partying, clubbing, dating, bedding, entitlement, but little of the traditional goals previous generations considered the ideals of adult life: work, career, marriage, family, and pleasing accomplishment. The authors of this fun book, Jim Geraghty and Cam Edwards, have had their fill of the present day and see the ideals of the pre-Baby Boom generation as something to revive – if in modern dress and terms. That is, they recognize that today is not the 1950s but that the character of Ward Cleaver in marrying June and raising Wally and the Beaver made a great deal of sense that led to happiness and fulfillment. We could do a lot worse than learning from his fictional example. Ward Cleaver was make believe in form but not in substance. He was so widely accepted for entertaining families in the 1950s because those families lived by those ideals at least in aspiration.

I am a child of the 1950s and grew up in the 1960s. I remember Ward Cleaver and identified with the Beaver, even if he seemed a bit simple to me. True, I liked my own family more. But I was supposed to. My parents were married at 19 and my father was a pilot who flew planes around and transported wounded during World War II. He worked hard all his life and so did my mother. I grew up fully expecting to leave home at 18, go to college or get a trade like my father and older brother. Eventually, I would marry and have my own family. That is the way the world “worked”. And it does work better that way. I ended up going to Michigan State for a year, going on a mission for my church for two years in Brisbane, Australia, came home, met my wife and we married while I prepared to audition for music school at the University of Michigan. We attended there from 1978 through 1984 and we had three of our six children while I was a student there. Sure, we have done the traditional family thing, but not in the traditional way. We have been entrepreneurs most of our lives and worked together and for ourselves rather than in big companies.

Our own children are not the clich�d living in basement types either. They have gone out in the world and built careers and formed companies and gotten married and had kids of their own. But I know not everyone does this. And this book is a handbook for those people. The book has 23 chapters in five parts. The first discusses the need to leave home. Yes, it is cozy and comforting to let Mom and Dad provide your roof, food, and health insurance, but it is bad for you.

The First Part is about Breaking Away. The first chapter introduces the Ward Cleaver trope of the book, chapter two debunks the idea that college prepares you for life and why gathering all that life stunting debt and not much education is a horrible idea (not that college is completely useless), chapter three is about getting your own place and why that is important to having your own life, chapter four is about the problems of having and being a roommate. (Personally, roommates almost always end badly for all parties.) Chapter 5 is on video games and the grown man – the authors are more modern and tolerant of them than I.

Each chapter begins with some introductory material and then each other offers their own humorous insights – and the insights are actually useful – and the chapter concludes with a little box with a witticism about Ward Cleaver’s approach to the subject.

Part Two is all about becoming and adult male. They have chapters on drinking (again, more tolerant than I on the subject), how you should dress, getting a job, why getting fired is not grounds for jumping off a bridge, and how to find a work life that you can actually enjoy.

Part Three is the key to your happiness. Not necessarily how these guys tell you to do it, but the main goals are correct. Begin by actually asking girls out on dates. What is involved in getting married. How to be a good husband (and, yes, you will have to learn the mantra “Happy Wife – Happy Life”). Getting your own home! And why the secret to a long and happy marriage is not getting divorced.

Part Four is about becoming a father and how to do it right. You won’t really (just ask your kids), but if you try your hardest you will clearly do better than if you are indifferent or neglectful. And, as a man who has been a father since 1978 I can assure you that the rewards of caring about your kids and their mother are immeasurable and worth more than all other aspects of life lumped together and multiplied by some stupidly large factor.

Part Five is about raising the kids (more than one) you and your wife have had and why you do need to do it together and stay together to get it right. All the fictions about being great parents as divorced parents are just as silly as the stupid fiction that you can bed a new girl each week as they do in every sitcom and live a happy, sane, and prosperous life. You can’t. Oh, you can lie to yourself about it. But it is nevertheless a lie. That is me talking, not so much the authors. The authors just say that marriage and parenting are forever. I will point out that once you have kids you can live separately and even marry again, but you can never get divorced in the sense of separating your lives completely because the kids keep your lives tied to each other.

Anyway, this is a useful and humorous and, as I said, insightful book. Enjoy.

Geraghty and Edwards offer up a boatload of practical advice and common sense in this important new book.

“I can’t think of a better definition of a failed man than a deadbeat dad. If you bring a child into the world, your purpose in life is to be involved with that child and guide him to adulthood. Fatherhood is a job you don’t get to quit. Fathers teach sons how to be men; they teach daughters what to expect from men.” -- page 128

This quotation from co-author Jim Geraghty certainly flies in the face of the prevailing wisdom in this country where we are told that “it takes a village” to raise a child. It is so much nonsense. Today’s twenty-somethings have been indoctrinated since kindergarten with a destructive set of values that lower expectations and in all too many cases arrests development. Thus we have a generation of young men still living in their parent’s basements, many of whom are essentially afraid to participate in adulthood. Jim Geraghty and Cam Edwards have come to the rescue with a new book that some might deem controversial. “Heavy Lifting: Grow Up, Get a Job, Start a Family and Other Manly Advice” unabashedly espouses the traditional values that were embraced by ‘the greatest generation”. I never thought I would live to see the day when a book like this would be necessary but in my view it is a long overdue breath of fresh air.

Aside from urging young men to leave the comfort and security of mom and dad’s place the authors also address other pertinent issues such as how to co-exist with a new roommate, how to dress for success, how to go about looking for that first real job and mustering up the courage to ask the special young lady you fancy for a date. They go on to discuss such potentially destructive behaviors such as addiction to video games, porn and alcohol. In the second portion of the book the authors urge their readers to seriously consider marriage and then starting a family. Geraghty and Edwards lament the fact that so many young people seem to view parenthood as an 18 year prison sentence. They offer a very realistic view of what to expect in a marriage and how fathering and raising a child should be the most important thing you will ever do in your life. As I indicated this book is most definitely counter-cultural.

Now if there is a young man in your life that needs a nudge I suggest you present them with a copy of “Heavy Lifting”. This is a well written and thought-provoking book that should prompt some interesting discussions. Recommended.

This is a great book to leave on the unmade bed of a teenager in your life, but only after you've read it yourself and rebutted a few nagging doubts that are likely knocking around in your head. Well paced, funny, and insightful, Geraghty and Edwards offer a light hearted but resonate affirmation of one the fundamental pillars of our society- being a good dad. But beyond a father's contribution to society, the book nicely illustrates that it's also the most fulfilling way to spend one's days. If nothing else- it shows that you can still hang out with your best friend 20 years after graduation.
